This thesis explores the relative complexity of proofs produced by the automatic theorem proving procedures of analytic tableaux, linear resolution, the connection method, tree resolution and the Davis-Putnam procedure. It is shown that tree resolution simulates the improved tableau procedure and that SL-resolution and the connection method are equivalent to restrictions of the improved tableau...
The Quine/Putnam indispensability approach to the confirmation of mathematical theories in recent times has been the subject of significant criticism. In this paper I explore an alternative to the Quine/Putnam indispensability approach. I begin with a van Fraassen-like distinction between accepting the adequacy of a mathematical theory and believing in the truth of a mathematical theory. Finall...
Putnam gives a strongly realist account of quantum logic. This has been criticised as suggesting a hidden variable interpretation for quantum mechanics. Friedman and Glymour have done this in the framework of noncontextual hidden variable theories, which, however, does not fully represent Putnam's ideas. Here Putnam's approach to quantum logic is understood in terms of contextual truth-value as...

1) Introduction In 1965 Hilary Putnam published the standard work on the interpretation of quantum mechanics, a piece that all philosophers of quantum mechanics of the time had to come to terms with. He laid out one-by-one in a clear non-technical way each of the available approaches to the problem and explained, again non-technically but very exactly, what is wrong with them. In his own final ...
We compare two prominent decision procedures for propositional logic: Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (obdds) and the Davis-Putnam procedure. Experimental results indicate that the Davis-Putnam procedure outperforms obdds in hard constraint-satisfaction problems, while obdds are clearly superior for Boolean functional equivalence problems from the circuit domain, and, in general, problems that...
