A common trunk of the left pulmonary vein is an anatomical variation in the pulmonary vessels and may be incidentally transected during left upper lobectomy. Difficulty in reconstruction of the left inferior vein often requires completion pneumonectomy. We herein describe a patient with lung cancer in the left upper lobe of the lung. His common trunk of the left pulmonary vein was incidentally ...
Cardiac tissue in the pulmonary vein sleeves plays an important role in clinical atrial fibrillation. Mechanisms leading to pulmonary vein activity in atrial fibrillation remain unclear. Indirect experimental evidence points to pulmonary vein Ca(2+) handling as a potential culprit, but there are no direct studies of pulmonary vein cardiomyocyte Ca(2+) handling in the literature. We used the Ca(...
A case is reported of recurrence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation after pulmonary vein ablation. A second procedure achieved isolation of three pulmonary veins and showed persistence of pulmonary vein tachycardia in one with implications concerning the electrophysiology of atrial fibrillation.
Pulmonary vein thrombosis is a rare but potentially life threatening complication following lobectomy or bilobectomy. We present a case of right upper pulmonary vein thrombosis after a middle and lower lobectomy diagnosed at transoesophageal echocardiography. The patient was treated with antibiotics and anticoagulation with good recovery. Pulmonary angiography was performed 35 days after surger...
Pulmonary embolism is considered to originate from embolization of a deep-vein thrombosis, resulting in two manifestations of one disease: venous thrombosis. However, in up to 50% of patients with pulmonary embolism no deep-vein thrombosis is found with ultrasonography. An explanation for this low proportion is currently lacking. Other imaging modalities may increase the yield of detection of d...
deep vein thrombosis (dvt) is an important life threatening condition that is difficult to diagnose, particularly in the early stages. looking for dvt in lower limb can be considered ancillary in suspected cases of pulmonary embolism (pe) indirectly highlighting a cause and effect relationship of a single disease (i.e cause being dvt and effect is the assault on the lung vasculature). prompt an...
Fifty-six combined right and left heart catheterizations in normal dogs and clogs with experimental mitral stenosis failed to show a significant positive correlation between pulmonary artery wedge pressure and pulmonary vein pressure when the latter was below approximately 17 mm. Hg. Evidence is presented which suggests that the wedged catheter outlets are totally occluded in many instances in ...
OBJECTIVE Left atrium (LA) and left atrial pulmonary venous anatomy have clinical importance for atrial fibrillation (AF) and cardiac tumor surgery. A detailed anatomic knowledge of these structures may faciliate clinical evaluations. The aim of this study was to assess LA size and to demonstrate other anatomic features of LA with pulmonary vein openings in normal population. METHODS This des...
PURPOSE To document the incidence of proximal deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in 58 consecutive Japanese patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty. METHODS Patients were routinely examined for proximal deep vein thrombosis by B-mode ultrasonography before and after surgery. Those patients who had ultrasonographic findings of deep vein thrombosis were al...
Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) causes a left-to-right shunt from the anomalous pulmonary vein (PV) to a systemic vein. We report an uncommon adult case of PAPVC, in which the left upper PV drained into both the innominate vein and the left atrium (LA), demonstrating retrograde shunting from the LA to the innominate vein. The anomaly was surgically repaired.
