Service differentiation is one of the key issues in the current Internet. In this paper, we focus on a recent proposal for proportional loss rate differentiation which employs a single FIFO queue, an AQM algorithm for computing the packet drop probability, and a counter-based packet dropping routine for achieving the intended proportional loss rate differentiation among classes. It is first sho...

Aim The purpose of the present study was to investigate the predictors of clinical deterioration soon after emergency department (ED) discharge. Methods We undertook a case-control study using the ED database of the Nagano Municipal Hospital (Nagano, Japan) from January 2012 to December 2013. We selected adult patients with medical conditions who revisited the ED with deterioration within 2 d...

This paper describes the design of a novel sliding mode controller for tracking of robotic manipulators. By using a proportional-integral combination of the sliding function in the boundary layer, control chattering is eliminated without deterioration of system robustness. Theoretical developments are verified by simulation results for the tracking problem of a 2 DOF robotic manipulator.

The roles of the several parameters that influences railway track deterioration most, are examined in this research with a view to make railway track maintenance more effective and cost efficient. The results presented are based on a comprehensive study of railway track degradation on super structure, sub-structure and geometrical aspects. The changes in TQI (Track Quality Index), the track set...

Recent extensions to the Internet architecture allow assignment of different levels of drop precedence to IP packets. This paper examines differentiation predictability and implementation complexity in creation of proportional loss-rate (PLR) differentiation between drop precedence levels. PLR differentiation means that fixed loss-rate ratios between different traffic aggregates are provided in...

The relationship between mammalian basal metabolic rate (BMR, ml of O(2) per h) and body mass (M, g) has been the subject of regular investigation for over a century. Typically, the relationship is expressed as an allometric equation of the form BMR = aM(b). The scaling exponent (b) is a point of contention throughout this body of literature, within which arguments for and against geometric (b ...

In this paper, we propose a new packet loss control mechanism – Dynamic Partial Buffer Sharing scheme. With DPBS scheme, the thresholds are dynamically adjusted in run-time based on packet loss behavior. So that DPBS scheme avoids parameter-setting problem, and it can achieve desired relative packet loss ratio easily. In addition, DPBS scheme can achieve higher buffer utilization for its adapta...

The relative differentiated service model is one of several models proposed for service differentiation in networks [IEEE Network Sept/Oct (1999) 26]. In this model, an assurance is given that ‘higher classes will be better, or at least no worse than lower classes.’ This paper describes a relative loss rate differentiation scheme based on RED. The scheme is used for differentially dropping pack...

Due to significant progress in cancer treatments and management in survival studies involving time to relapse (or death), we often need survival models with cured fraction to account for the subjects enjoying prolonged survival. Our article presents a new proportional odds survival models with a cured fraction using a special hierarchical structure of the latent factors activating cure. This ne...

We discuss the use of local likelihood methods to fit proportional hazards regression models to right and interval censored data. The assumed model allows for an arbitrary, smoothed baseline hazard on which a vector of covariates operates in a proportional manner, and thus produces an interpretable baseline hazard function along with estimates of global covariate effects. For estimation, we ext...
