It is believed that anticancer and apoptosis inducing properties of green tea are mediated by it's polyphenolic constituents particularly catechins. A number of reports have shown that green tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is among the most effective chemopreventive and apoptosis-inducing agents present in the beverage. Plant polyphenols are naturally occurring antioxidants...
The synthetic retinoid N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide (4HPR) is being examined in both chemoprevention and therapy clinical trials. Yet, its mechanism(s) of action is still not fully elucidated. In previous studies, an increase in mitochondrial reactive oxygen species has been proposed as one mechanism through which 4HPR could exert its proapoptotic effects. This study explored whether mitochond...
The present study was carried out to study the effect of antioxidants on oxidised LDL + VLDL and found that vitamin E, eugenol and tincture of crataegus (antioxidants) inhibited oxidation of (LDL + VLDL) similar to standard antioxidant (butylated hydroxy toluene). Vitamin C acted as an antioxidant at lower concentration, and prooxidant at higher concentration.
Pine, grape and witch hazel byproducts are rich sources of polyphenols. From extracts (OW) soluble in both ethyl acetate and water we have generated a collection of fractions differing in percentage of pyrogallol groups. The mixtures were highly active as free radical scavengers against DPPH. The phenolics protected red blood cells from free radical induced hemolysis and were mildly cytotoxic t...
Polyphenols have been implicated in the virulence and oxidant resistance of Cryptococcus neoformans. Although monomeric polyphenols did not protect against the prooxidant, plumbagin, polymeric dopamine-melanin conferred resistance both to hypochlorite and to permanganate. The physiologic antioxidant capacity conferred by melanin was found to be 21.3 x 10(-15) mole-equivalents per cell, a value ...
Antioxidant and prooxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol in human plasma and low density lipoprotein.
Alpha-Tocopherol is a classical lipophilic antioxidant well known as a scavenger of free radicals in a hydrophobic milieu. However, it can develop both anti- and prooxidant activity in isolated low density lipoprotein (LDL). It is unknown how these activities are balanced in vivo in human plasma. We studied oxidation of plasma and LDL isolated from healthy donors or from a patient with familial...
