Lipoteichoic acid from Staphylococcus aureus was a potent inducer of procoagulant activity in isolated mononuclear cells but not in whole blood. In contrast, staphylococcal peptidoglycan showed equal levels of potency in isolated mononuclear cells and whole blood, suggesting that peptidoglycan is an important inducer of procoagulant activity in severe sepsis involving gram-positive bacteria.

OBJECTIVE In the blood coagulation process, the rate of thrombin formation is critically dependent on phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) at the surface of activated platelets. Thrombin synergistically enhances the collagen-induced platelet procoagulant response. The objective of this study is to elucidate the mechanism of this synergistic action with a focus on the intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([C...

Islet and hepatocyte transplantation are associated with tissue factor-dependent activation of coagulation which elicits instant blood mediated inflammatory reaction, thereby contributing to a low rate of engraftment. The aim of this study was i) to evaluate the procoagulant activity of human adult liver-derived mesenchymal progenitor cells (hALPCs), ii) to compare it to other mesenchymal cells...

T hrombosis is a dynamic process in which procoagulant activity, which promotes platelet activation and fibrin deposition, is balanced by physiologic anticoagulant and fibrinolytic activity. Historically, the treatment of thrombosis has been based on the use of agents that either inhibit procoagulant activity (i.e., anticoagulants) or induce fibrinolytic activity (i.e., plasminogen activators)....

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia is characterized by moderate thrombocytopenia and thrombotic complications, whereas quinine/quinidine-induced thrombocytopenia usually presents with severe thrombocytopenia and bleeding. Using flow cytometry and assays of procoagulant activity, we investigated whether sera from patients with these immune drug reactions could stimulate normal platelets to generat...

Idarubicin (IDR), cytarabine (AraC), and tamibarotene (Am80) are effective for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In acute leukemia, the incidence of venous thromboembolism or disseminated intravascular coagulation is associated with induction chemotherapy. Procoagulant effects of IDR, AraC, and Am80 were investigated in a vascular endothelial cell line EAhy926 and AML cell lines HL60 (...

snake venoms contain a rich variety of factors which affect blood coagulation. there have been few reports on the anticoagulant activity of the venom of different cobras, but no such observations have been made on the iranian cobra, although a procoagulant factor has been described. in this study an anticoagulant factor has been purified from the venom of naja naja oxiana using gel filtration f...

Human high molecular weight kininogen (HMWK). a singlechain protein with mol wt 120.000. is cleaved by human urinary kallikrein (HUK) to release kinin from within a disulfide loop and form a two-chain protein that retains all the procoagulant activity of the native molecule. Cleavage of HMWK by HUK is associated with a reduction in size to mol wt 1 1 5.000. as assessed by SDS-PAGE of unreduced ...
