Streptomyces albus is the type species of the genus Streptomyces. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of S. albus strain NBRC 13014(T). The genome contains at least seven orphan polyketide synthase and nonribosomal peptide synthetase gene clusters. The genome sequence will also serve as a valuable reference for Streptomyces taxonomy.

endo-derived nitric oxide (no) is synthesized from l-arginine by endothelium nitric oxide synthase (enos). since reduced no synthesis has been implicated in the development of coronary atherosclerosis; we hypothesized that polymorphisms of nos gene might be associated with increased susceptibility to this disorder and coronary artery disease (cad). we studied the 27 base pair tandem repeat poly...

A unique highly reducing polyketide synthase (HR-PKS) with a reductase domain was identified in a betaenone biosynthetic gene cluster. Successful heterologous expression and characterization of the HR-PKS and trans-acting enoyl reductase (ER) provide insights into the core structure formation with a decalin scaffold and allow reconstitution of the betaenone biosynthetic machinery.

Streptomyces sp. TP-A0873, isolated from deep-sea water, produces three different classes of secondary metabolites: antimycin, bohemamine, and alkylated butenolides. In order to assess the biosynthetic potential of this strain, draft genome sequencing was carried out. The genome contained at least 14 gene clusters for polyketide synthase (PKS) and nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS).

Chain lengths and cyclization patterns of microbial polyketides are generally determined by polyketide synthases alone. Fungal polyketide melanins are often derived from a pentaketide 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene, and pentaketide synthases are used for synthesis of the upstream pentaketide precursor, 1,3,6,8-tetrahydroxynaphthalene (1,3,6,8-THN). However, Aspergillus fumigatus, a human fungal patho...

Streptomyces avermitilis is a soil bacterium that carries out not only a complex morphological differentiation but also the production of secondary metabolites, one of which, avermectin, is commercially important in human and veterinary medicine. The major interest in this genus Streptomyces is the diversity of its production of secondary metabolites as an industrial microorganism. A major fact...

We recently described the isolation and sequence analysis of the daunomycin polyketide synthase biosynthesis genes of Streptomyces sp. strain C5 (J. Ye, M. L. Dickens, R. Plater, Y. Li, J. Lawrence, and W. R. Strohl, J. Bacteriol. 176:6270-6280, 1994). Contiguous to the daunomycin polyketide synthase biosynthesis gene region in Streptomyces sp. strain C5 are four additional genes involved in da...

Polyketides are among the major classes of bioactive natural products used to treat microbial infections, cancer, and other diseases. Here we describe a pathway to chloroethylmalonyl-CoA as a polyketide synthase building block in the biosynthesis of salinosporamide A, a marine microbial metabolite whose chlorine atom is crucial for potent proteasome inhibition and anticancer activity. S-adenosy...

Secondary metabolites are small molecules that show large structural diversity and a broad range of bioactivities. Some metabolites are attractive as drugs or pigments while others act as harmful mycotoxins. Filamentous fungi have the capacity to produce a wide array of secondary metabolites including polyketides. The majority of genes required for production of these metabolites are mostly org...
