Pneumocephalus or collection of air in the intracranial cavity can occur after trauma or surgery. However, delayed pneumocephalus occurring months after the initial injury is not common. We would like to report a case of spontaneous traumatic pneumoencephalocele presenting with transient recurrent hemiparesis 14 months after the initial trauma.

Tension pneumocephalus is an exceedingly rare complication of cerebrospinal fluid diversion occurring after surgery, trauma or spontaneous fistula formation. We report a case in a patient with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt who developed symptomatic tension pneumocephalus via a skin defect within 24 hours of undergoing bone cement cranioplasty.

Spontaneous pneumocephalus following cerebrospinal fluid shunt is a rare complication. In most cases, the air enters in the intracranial cavity via a skull base defect. We report 2 cases of delayed tension pneumocephalus, secondary to ventriculoperitoneal shunt, and review the etiopathogenesis, prevention and treatment of this condition.

Pneumocephalus is common after brain surgeries, but usually is not substantial enough to cause serious complications. We recently encountered a case of post-operative tachypnea after an endoscopic 3rd ventriculostomy. At first, we thought that the hyperventilation was the result of residual paralysis after emergence from anesthesia, but during further evaluation we found a massive pneumocephalu...

Introduction. Pneumocephalus is a clinical entity characterised by the presence of gas in intracranial space. It can result from many different causes. The most common cause head or facial trauma. Other causes include neoplasms, infections, and surgical diagnostic procedures. Spontaneous non-traumatic pneumocephalus rare condition caused bone defects, malformations, tumours, intravenous air inj...

BACKGROUND Pneumocephalus, illustrated by air in the cranial vault is relatively infrequent and generally associated with neurosurgery, trauma, meningitis and barotrauma. However cases of spontaneous non-traumatic pneumocephalus remain rare. While the relationship between continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and atraumatic pneumocephalus has been previously reported, to our knowledge the ...

We sometimes use oxygen therapy to patients with pneumocephalus after craniotomy. However, I have never seen any clinical studies about this until now! I found a paper from Gore et al. In a prospective study they examined the efficacy and effect on the rate of pneumocephalus absorption. A group of patients received 100% (normobaric) supplemental 0(2) through a nonrebreather mask at 12 L/minute ...

Background Pneumocephalus is a rare phenomenon that can occur as a complication after operations involving the thoracic discs, following thoracotomy for tumor resection, and after an intracranial operation or cranial trauma. This complication frequently occurs when a tumor is located in the costovertebral angle and an operative intervention creates a tear in the dura resulting in a pleural-dura...

An unusual case of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea with a pneumocephalus is described in a middle-aged woman who presented with a watery nasal discharge for 1 week and headache, vomiting, and fever for 1 day. The neurological examination revealed meningeal signs and bilateral papilledema. The CSF picture suggested pyogenic meningitis, and computed tomography of the brain reveal...

Tension pneumocephalus is an uncommon and life-threatening neurological condition. It requires emergent and immediate attention to prevent fatal complications. Head injury is the most common cause of tension pneumocephalus. Air can gain access into the cranium either through a fracture involving paranasal sinus or the middle ear cavity or even more rarely in association with a compound depresse...
