Escherichia coli isolates expressing plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance and expanded-spectrum b-lactamase. Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2006; 50: 1525–7. 9 Strahilevitz J, Engelstein D, Adler A et al. Changes in qnr prevalence and fluoroquinolone resistance in clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter spp. collected from 1990 to 2005. Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2007; 51: 30...
Antimicrobial-resistant pathogenic members of the Enterobacteriaceae are a well-defined global problem. We hypothesized that one of the main reservoirs of dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes in Vietnam is non-pathogenic intestinal flora, and sought to isolate antimicrobial-resistant organisms from hospitalized patients and non-hospitalized healthy individuals in Ho Chi Minh City. Th...
Aeromonas spp. are oxidase positive, gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacilli that are widely distributed in aquatic environments. A.hydrophila, A.sobria and A.bestiarum may cause severe infections in both human and cold-blooded animals. Environmental persistance of quinolones that are widely used in both human and veterinary medicine plays an important role in the selection of resistant mu...
Human isolates of Salmonella enterica serovars Hadar, Kentucky, Virchow, Schwarzengrund, and the monophasic variant of S. Typhimurium, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar 4,5,12:i:- were examined for mutations within the quinolone resistance target genes gyrA, gyrB, parC, and parE and for plasmid-mediated resistance genes. Differences were observed among the serovars. A novel variant of...
We searched for plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance determinants of the Qnr type in several water samples collected at diverse locations from the Seine River (Paris, France). The qnrS2 genes were identified from Aeromonas punctata subsp. punctata and A. media. The qnrS2 gene was located on IncU-type plasmids in both isolates, which resulted in increased MIC values of quinolones and fluoroquin...
Fourteen out of 16 carbapenem-resistant quinolone-susceptible Enterobacter cloacae isolates were found to carry qnrB2 and bla(KPC-2) genes encoded on the same plasmid. One isolate also carried the aac(6')-Ib-cr gene. Coexistence of quinolone resistance determinants and bla(KPC-2) on the same plasmid in quinolone-susceptible E. cloacae isolates may have important clinical implications.
Quinolones are broad-spectrum synthetic antibacterial drugs first obtained during the synthesis of chloroquine. Nalidixic acid, the prototype of quinolones, first became available for clinical consumption in 1962 and was used mainly for urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli and other pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria. Recently, significant work has been carried out to synthesize n...
ABSTRACT Background and Objective: Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the most common causes of bacterial infections. Presence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes causes low level of resistance in K. pneumoniae. This study investigated the prevalence of resistance to quinolones and fluoroquinolones, and the frequency of qnrA, qnrB and qnrS genes amo...
Antimicrobials are heavily used in Chilean salmon aquaculture. We previously found significant differences in antimicrobial-resistant bacteria between sediments from an aquaculture and a non-aquaculture site. We now show that levels of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARG) are significantly higher in antimicrobial-selected marine bacteria than in unselected bacteria from these sites. While ARG i...
