Bovens and Hartmann (2003a, 2003b) propose to analyze coherence as a confidence-boosting property. On the basis of this idea, they construct a new probabilistic theory of coherence. In this paper, I will attempt to show that the resulting measure of coherence clashes with some of the intuitions that motivate it. Also, I will try to show that this clash is not due to the view on coherence as a c...
Pipelines carrying fluids and slurries are quite common. The third-generation pipelines carrying spherical or cylindrical capsules (hollow containers) filled with minerals or other materials including hazardous liquids are rather a new concept. These pipelines need to be designed optimally for commercial viability. An optimal design of such a pipeline results in minimum pressure drop in the pip...
Stream processing is currently an active research direction in computer vision. This is due to the existence of many computer vision algorithms that can be expressed as a pipeline of operations, and the increasing demand for online systems that process image and video streams. Recently, a formal stream algebra has been proposed as an abstract framework that mathematically describes computer vis...
The effects of a background uniform rotating magnetic field acting in a conducting fluid with a parallel flow are studied analytically. The stationary version with a transversal magnetic field is well known as generating Hartmann boundary layers. The Lorentz force includes now one term depending on the rotation speed and the distance to the boundary wall. As one intuitively expects, the rotatio...
A modified Hartmann test for testing aspherical convex surfaces of F/# 1 is analyzed. We present the main differences of this test in comparison to the usual Hartmann test. Theoretical results show that the transverse aberrations yielded by a testing surface have to be measured with respect to its mean sphere. A method to determine the mean sphere is also presented. Experimental results show th...
We survey and discuss upper bounds on the length of the transient phase of max-plus linear systems and sequences of max-plus matrix powers. In particular, we explain how to extend a result by Nachtigall to yield a new approach for proving such bounds and we state an asymptotic tightness result by using an example given by Hartmann and Arguelles.
The correlation of the ROSAT all-sky survey (Snowden et al. 1995) with the Leiden/Dwingeloo H I 21 cm-line survey (Hartmann & Burton 1997) leads to a consistent model of the soft X-ray background (SXRB). The diffuse X-ray radiation originates from three different components: I. The Local Hot Bubble (LHB) (ILHB), II. The diffuse X-ray emission of the Milky Way halo (IHALO), III. The extragalacti...
Hybrid measurement-based (MB) approaches for computing WCET estimates are gaining popularity due to difficulties modelling advanced microprocessor speed-up features. These approaches combine measured data of program segments by using static analysis techniques in order to reconstruct the longest path through the program. To this end, execution times of program segments are collected by first in...
A new asynchronous pipeline is presented for the self-timed design discipline of quasi-delay insensitivity with dual-rail encoding and four-phase handshaking. The function blocks of the pipeline consist of a universal gate (presented in the appendix) which is particularly simple, comprising only the conventional nand and nor gates, and is supported by an equally simple development method. The s...
