Thirty four term babies with physiological jaundice were subjected to continuous phototherapy and to two regimens of intermittent phototherapy. The difference in serum bilirubin kinetics between the three groups of treated babies was insignificant; a schedule of one in four hours of irradiation achieved the same treatment effect as continuous phototherapy.
Background: Phototherapy is the most effective treatment for neonatal jaundice and intermittent phototherapy is as effective as continuous phototherapy but with fewer complications and more benefits. This study compared the hospital length of stay, duration of phototherapy and the reducing rate of total serum bilirubin after 24 and 36 hours of phototherapy in two groups. Methods: The current d...
The irradiance produced by phototherapy units in use on a neonatal unit was measured. The phototherapy tubes were found to decline at a variable rate. Heat shields used to decrease heat and evaporative losses in the very low birthweight infant reduce irradiance and may appreciably limit the effectiveness of phototherapy.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To determine the most effective position jaundiced neonates should assume during phototherapy from appraised randomised controlled trials. BACKGROUND Many local hospitals still alternate positions of jaundiced neonates receiving phototherapy despite the safe infant sleeping protocol of placing them supine. DESIGN A systematic review was conducted. METHODS Databases tha...
Objective: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) was reported to be correlated with the time of phototherapy for babies with neonatal jaundice in the previous studies. The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of KMC on phototherapy for neonatal jaundice. Methods: 216 newborn babies with neonatal jaundice were collected in this study and randomly divided into KMC group and control group. 1...
BACKGROUND The role of phototherapy on neutrophils has not been reviewed previously. This novel and non-invasive therapeutic approach is of particular interest for potential use in the treatment of pathologic processes in dermatology and infectious diseases in which neutrophils are the primary culprit. OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this study was to systematically review the role of photother...
Although the outcomes of various treatment modalities for vitiligo have been studied extensively, the influence of the participant's characteristics on treatment response has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, we retrospectively investigated treatment effects and their association with clinical characteristics in Japanese patients with vitiligo. The charts of patients with vitiligo tr...
This article reviews recent literature on phototherapy for psoriasis, particularly narrowband UVB. The efficacy, safety, tolerability and acceptance of phototherapy are discussed. It focuses in detail on how to improve the efficacy and safety in practice by trying to optimize the protocols, using combination therapy, monitoring the cumulative dose and providing skin cancer surveillance. Careful...
Background and Objective: Phototherapy is one of the therapy methods for jaundice caused by hyperbilirubinemia. Vitamin D and bilirubin have two distinct routes of metabolism yet part of their syntheses is common in the liver and thus they may influence each other’s synthesis. One of the consequences of phototherapy not previously studied in detail is hypocalcaemia and hypomagn...
