Cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H) converts trans-cinnamic acid (CA) to p-coumaric acid (COA) in the phenylpropanoid/lignin biosynthesis pathway. Earlier we reported increased expression of AaCYP71AV1 (an important gene of artemisinin biosynthesis pathway) caused by CA treatment in Artemisia annua. Hence, AaC4H gene was identified, cloned, characterized and silenced in A. annua with the assumption t...

A four-step flavanone biosynthetic pathway was constructed and introduced into Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The recombinant yeast strain was fed with phenylpropanoid acids and produced the flavanones naringenin and pinocembrin 62 and 22 times more efficiently compared to previously reported recombinant prokaryotic strains. Microbial biosynthesis of the flavanone eriodictyol was also achieved.

The biosynthetic pathway of capsinoid in 'CH-19 Sweet' was investigated. [(3)H]Valine and [(14)C]phenylalanine were injected into the fruits of the intact plant. Both of radioactivities were detected in capsinoid fractions. (14)C radioactivity was observed in phenylpropanoid compounds, and in vanillin, vanillylamine, vanillyl alcohol, and vanillic acid. We confirmed that capsinoid is biosynthes...

A chimeric gene construct containing a bean chalcone synthase (CHS) promoter fused to the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) reporter gene was strongly expressed when electroporated into alfalfa protoplasts that were then exposed to a fungal elicitor. Low concentrations (5 x 10(-6) to 10(-4) M) of exogenously applied trans-cinnamic acid (CA), the first intermediate of the phenylpropanoid p...

Sulforaphane is an isothiocyanate which derived of glucoraphanin (a kind of glucosinolate) under hydrolysis of myrosinase enzyme, has shown various pharmaceutical properties such as anticancer activity in human. This glucosinolate abundantly found in Lepidium draba L. of Brassicaceae family. The goal of this research was investigation of the variation in sulforaphane, total flavonoid and anthoc...

Rhododendron liliiflorum H. Lév., with white outer edges and yellow inner of petals, is an ornamental flower that originated in China. In this study, we analysed the (W) (Y) parts R. flowers by RNA sequencing. Then, unigene assembly, annotation, classification Eukaryotic Orthologous Groups (KOGs) were performed. Gene ontology (GO) pathway enrichment analysis for unigenes also conducted. A total...

It is known that cells under stress accumulate various dinucleoside polyphosphates, compounds suggested to function as alarmones. In plants, the phenylpropanoid pathways yield metabolites protecting these organisms against various types of stress. Observations reported in this communication link these two phenomena and provide an example of a metabolic "addressee" for an "alarm" signaled by dia...

The aromatic amino acid Phe is required for protein synthesis and serves as the precursor of abundant phenylpropanoid plant natural products. While Phe is synthesized from prephenate exclusively via a phenylpyruvate intermediate in model microbes, the alternative pathway via arogenate is predominant in plant Phe biosynthesis. However, the molecular and biochemical evolution of the plant arogena...

OSW-1, isolated from the bulbs of Ornithogalum saundersiae Baker, is a steroidal saponin endowed with considerable antitumor properties. Biosynthesis of the 4-methoxybenzoyl group on the disaccharide moiety of OSW-1 is known to take place biochemically via the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway, but molecular biological characterization of the related genes has been insufficient. Cinnamic aci...
