Sensitised photolyses of ethoxycarbonyl oximes of aromatic and heteroaromatic ketones yielded iminyl radicals, which were characterised by EPR spectroscopy. Iminyls with suitably placed arene or heteroarene acceptors underwent cyclisations yielding phenanthridine-type products from ortho-additions. For benzofuran and benzothiophene acceptors, spiro-cyclisation predominated at low temperatures, ...

We identified target proteins modified by phenanthrenes that cause exclusive eradication of human cancer cells. The cytotoxic activity of the phenanthrenes in a variety of human cancer cells is attributed by these findings to post translational modifications of NuMA and kinesins HSET/kifC1 and kif18A. Their activity prevented the binding of NuMA to α-tubulin and kinesins in human cancer cells, ...

The preparation of the title compound, C26H25N, was achieved by the condensation of an ethano-lic mixture of benzaldehyde, cyclo-hexa-none and ammonium acetate in a 2:1:1 molar ratio. There are two crystallographically independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. The two cyclo-hexyl rings adopt an anti-envelope conformation with the benzyl moiety adopting a cis conformation with respect to th...

The effects of anionic chondroitin or dextran sulfates on the absorption and fluorescence properties of coralyne, a cationic benzo[c]phenanthridine type alkaloid, were studied in aqueous solution. The remarkably strong binding to both polysaccharides promotes the coralyne dimer formation, which was evidenced by the changes in the absorption and fluorescence spectra and the fluorescence decay. T...

Oxime carbonates were found to be excellent precursors for the clean and direct generation of iminyl radicals under UV irradiation. Suitably functionalised iminyls underwent cyclisations yielding various phenanthridines and also substituted quinolines and isoquinolines. EPR and X-ray analyses of oxime carbonates provided insight into the mechanism.

Quaternary benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids (QBA) sanguinarine and chelerythrine exhibit a wide spectrum of biological activities whence they are used in dental care products. Recent studies indicated that cytochrome P450 CYP1A attenuates sanguinarine toxicity both in vivo [Williams, M.K., Dalvi, S., Dalvi, R.R., 2000. Influence of 3-methylcholanthrene pretreatment on sanguinarine toxicity in m...
