Metal matrix composites are the class of composite materials finding vast applications in automotive, aircraft, defense, sports and appliance industries. A horizontal ball mill has been fabricated for milling of aluminum and SiC particles. The change in powder particle morphology during mechanical alloying of Aluminum and SiC powders using horizontal ball mill was studied. Al-SiCp composites wi...

Two differently-produced open-cell aluminum foams were compared to a commercially available finned heat sink. Further, an aluminum plate and block were tested as a reference. All heat sinks have the same base plate dimensions of four by six inches. The first foam was made by investment casting of a polyurethane preform and has a porosity of 0.946 and a pore density of 10 pores per linear inch. ...

We present a methodology for the computation of flow fields involving complex perforated surfaces in propulsion applications. Of particular interest is the treatment of perforated flaps used as wedge-shaped fan flow deflectors for reducing jet noise of a supersonic turbofan engine. A three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver is used to compute the flow field of the external jet p...

Flexible forming is a sheet metal forming process with the application of soft material tooling. In this study, flexible (silicone rubber, SR, and styrene butadiene rubber, SBR) and semi-rigid (polyamide 66, PA) polymeric materials were adopted to make several upper dies which were used in combination with aluminium lower dies. Stamping operations were performed on a thin aluminium alloy sheet ...

We show that a planar structure, consisting of an ultrathin semiconducting layer topped with a solid nanoscopically perforated metallic film and then a dielectric interference film, can highly absorb (superabsorb) electromagnetic radiation in the entire visible range, and thus can become a platform for high-efficiency solar cells. The perforated metallic film and the ultrathin absorber in this ...

In recent years, treatment techniques in which polyglycolic acid sheets are applied to various situations with fibrin glue have exhibited great clinical potential, and previous studies have reported safety and efficacy. We describe closure of a non-healing perforated duodenal ulcer with the use of a polyglycolic acid sheet and fibrin glue in an elderly patient who was not a candidate for surgery.

Shape-morphing structures, which are able to change their shapes from one state another, important in a wide range of engineering applications. A popular scenario is morphing an initial two-dimensional (2D) shape that flat three-dimensional (3D) target shape. One the exciting manufacturing paradigms transforming 2D sheets with prescribed cuts (i.e. kirigami) into 3D structures. By employing for...

-In this paper a three-phase model (liquid, solid and gas) of the mushy zone for investigation of porosity formation in solidifying castings is developed. This model takes into account the release of the dissolved gas from the alloy as well as heat transfer and interdendritic fluid flow in the mushy zone. An important aspect of this work is related to accounting for the term describing porosity...
