We report the first catalytic asymmetric cyanation of N-Boc ketoimines, which enables highly enantioselective synthesis of oxindole based α-amino nitriles. An unprecedented tandem aza-Wittig/Strecker reaction is also developed, emerging as a promising strategy for the catalytic asymmetric cyanation of ketoimines formed in situ from achiral ketones.

A new polymer acid catalyst, sulfonated hyperbranched poly(arylene oxindole), 5-OH-SHPAO, was prepared for selective cellulose hydrolysis. Its superior catalysis, showing high glucose selectivity at almost full cellulose conversion, is attributed to the presence of an hydroxyl group next to the sulfonic acid, therefore mimicking the separate acid-base pair in the cellulase active site.

Chiral binaphthyl-modified squaramide-catalyzed enantioselective addition of diphenyl phosphonate to ketimines derived from isatins has been achieved. This method affords practical and efficient access to chiral 3-amino-3-phosphonyl-substituted oxindole derivatives in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee).

The title spiro-compound, C(20)H(16)N(4)O, crystallizes with four independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. In all of them, the oxindole unit is planar, the r.m.s. deviations ranging from 0.07 to 0.08 Å, while the pyrrolinyl ring adopts an envelope conformation (with the N atom representing the flap). In the crystal, adjacent mol-ecules are linked by N-H⋯N and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

We report an unusual face selective reduction of the exocyclic double bond in the α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone motif of spiro-oxindole systems. The spiro-oxindoles were assembled by an indium metal mediated Barbier-type reaction followed by an acid catalyzed lactonization.
