Packet-switching characteristics are optimized across an integrated 4 x 4 optical cross-point switch matrix based on active vertical coupler switch cells. Optical gain is demonstrated across the entire matrix with a <3-dB difference between the shortest and longest switching paths.

We demonstrated a 1 4 all-optical packet switch with all-optical header processing at a header rate of 5 Gb/s and payload rate of 10 Gb/s using injection-locking in a single Fabry–Pérot laser diode at each output port of the switch.

In this paper we describe oPASS (Optical PAcket Switch Simulator), a simulation tool specifically designed for the evaluation of slotted Optical Packet Switching (OPS) switching architectures. oPASS is implemented in OMNET++, a general purpose eventdriven simulation framework. oPASS allows the evaluation of classical parameters in packet networks like packet loss probability and distribution of...

The performance of an optical switch that handles contention resolution using a fiber delay line (FDL) is modeled and evaluated. We propose using a simple optical buffer that contains only a single FDL for contention resolution. The analytical model derived for the performance of an optical switch based on this buffer is verified using simulations. The analytical model can be utilized with both...

The application of photonic technologies to packet switching offers the potential of very large switch capacity in the terabit per second range. The merging of packet switching with photonic technologies opens up the possibility of packet switching in transparent photonic media, in which packets remain in optical form without undergoing optoelectronic conversion. This paper reviews recent work ...

For lack of optical random access memory, optical fiber delay line (FDL) is currently the only technology to implement optical buffering. Feed-forward and feedback are two types of FDL structures in optical buffering, both have advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we present a novel architecture for WDM optical packet switches with an effective hybrid FDL buffering that combines the mer...

Photonic all-optical switch is widely considered as one of the techniques to utilize the enormous optical bandwidth. This paper attempts to present a mathematical model for a loop buffer based switch and brings out the aspects of designing the all optical switch. The important aspects discussed are length of the optical loop and the design of EDFA. This paper also deals with the comparison of m...
