Between January 1983 and March 1988 25 patients with aneurysms of the ascending aorta were operated, out of these only 15 (56%) electively. Acute incompetence (10) were the main indications for operation. Poststenotic aneurysms (2), mycotic (2) and saccular sclerotic (1) aneurysms have also been observed. A rare case of a ruptured ascending aorta due to histologically and serologically proven B...
A primary aortic neoplasm in a 4-year-old asymptomatic boy is described. At operation the tumour was found to originate from the descending thoracici aorta. Histologically it proved to be a leiomyoma. The operative findings and pathological features are briefly discussed.
The clinical and laboratory findings of interruption of the aortic arch are described. These infants present with a clinical picture similar to preductal coarctation of the aorta. Only by angiography can the diagnosis be established. Prompt recognition and diagnosis of interruption of the aortic arch is important, since palliative and corrective operative procedures are currently available. Wit...
We describe the placement of an endovascular stent-graft in a patient with mycotic aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta caused by Salmonella. Endovascular grafting combined with antibiotic therapy in thoracic mycotic aneurysms might represent an alternative to conventional surgery in patients with high operative risk.
We report the case of a 82-year-old woman, asymptomatic, subject to chest computed tomography for trauma. Then the patient underwent surgery. Before sternotomy, femoro-femoral bypass was starter in order to decompress the aneurysm; using deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest, ascending aorta and hemiarch replacement were performed with a Dacron graft. Post-operative course was uneventful.
Methods 1217 patients with BAV were treated in the Institute during 2003−2012. There were 902 (74.1%) males. Patients age ranged from 3 days to 76 years, mean 50.2 ± 9,8 years. Aneurysm of ascending aorta took place in 380 (31.2%) pts, 39 (10,3%) of them admitted with dissection. We use: balloon valvuloplasty in 82 (8.1%) patients. Different operative interventions were fulfilled to the rest :1...
We report the case of a 74 year old female who presented with imaging concerning for an intramural hematoma of the ascending aorta. Despite multiple imaging modalities consistent with intramural hematoma, operative findings confirmed a peri-aortic lymphoma or what was once lymphoma.
A series of 55 surgically treated cases of coarctation of the thoracic aorta is presented with an operative mortality of 5-4%. The problems encountered in infants are discussed and postoperative complications in adults and children detailed. The advantages of patch graft aortoplasty over resection and end-to-end anastomosis are described.
Aortobronchial (AB) fistula is a rare disease, which is presented with massive hemoptysis; lethal if not treated. It should be suspected in any patient who presents with massive hemoptysis and had previous thoracic aortic surgery, but even it may be seen in patients without any history of operation on the thoracic aorta. Although, today in many centers endovascular therapy is done for these pat...
