Enucleation, a rare feature of mammalian differentiation, occurs in 3 cell types: erythroblasts, lens epithelium, and keratinocytes. Previous investigations suggest that caspase activation functions in lens epithelial and keratinocyte enucleation, as well as in early erythropoiesis encompassing erythroid burst-forming unit (BFU-E) differentiation to proerythroblast. To determine whether caspase...

We consider the thermodynamics of the matter made of equal number of neutrons and protons and of scalar dibaryons. They interact via the exchange of scalar and vector mesons. The interaction is taken into account in the mean field approximation. The condensation of dibaryons in this matter and the phase transition of matter to quark matter are considered. Possible signatures of dibaryons in Hea...

This article provides a concise review of selected topics in the many-body physics of low density nuclear systems. The discussion includes the condensation of alpha particles in supernova envelopes, formation of three-body bound states and the BEC-BCS crossover in dilute nuclear matter, and neutrino production in S-wave paired superfluid neutron matter.

The main features of coupled-channel K̄N dynamics near threshold and its repercussions in few-body K̄-nuclear systems are briefly reviewed highlighting the I = 1/2 K̄NN system. For heavier nuclei, the extension of mean-field calculations to multi-K̄ nuclear quasibound states is discussed focusing on kaon condensation.

Mammalian telomeres are composed of long arrays of TTAGGG repeats complexed with the TTAGGG repeat binding factor, TRF. Biochemical and ultrastructural data presented here show that the telomeric DNA and TRF colocalize in individual, condensed structures in the nuclear matrix. Telomeric TTAGGG repeats were found to carry an array of nuclear matrix attachment sites occurring at a frequency of at...

Immunocytochemical localization and in situ hybridization techniques were used to investigate the presence of spermatid nuclear transition protein 1 (TP1) and its mRNA during the various stages of spermatogenesis in the rat. A specific antiserum to TP1 was raised in a rabbit and used to show that TP1 is immunologically crossreactive among many mammals including humans. During spermatogenesis th...

We studied the effects of actinomycin D, alpha-amanitin, puromycin, and cycloheximide on the cytoplasmic activity of maturing Rana pipiens oocytes that induces chromosome condensation in transplanted brain nuclei. Treatment of oocytes with each inhibitor suppressed the chromosome condensation induced by metaphase oocytes to varying degrees depending upon the dose of inhibitor, despite the fact ...
