Germline mutations in the BRCA1 gene are known predictive markers for the development of hereditary breast cancer. Nevertheless, no comprehensive study has been performed targeting the presence and relevance of BRCA1 mutations in Moroccan breast cancer patients. We here present an analysis of BRCA1 gene regions (exon 2 and exon 11a/b) of 50 female Moroccan breast cancer patients with early dise...

This paper addresses how gender and age, as macro-sociological factors, influence variation change in the Northern Moroccan Arabic variety of Ouezzane, social meaning plays a role this variation. To do so, it examines high degree variability realization two phonetic variables, voiceless alveolar plosive /t/ uvular /q/, corpus semi-scripted interviews with 20 local informants. The data for study...

We present new language resources for Moroccan and Sanaani Yemeni Arabic. The resources include corpora for each dialect which have been morphologically annotated, and morphological analyzers for each dialect which are derived from these corpora. These are the first sets of resources for Moroccan and Yemeni Arabic. The resources will be made available to the public.

With interest we read the report of a psychosis incidence study in the Dutch town of Utrecht (Zandi et al., 2010). The authors hypothesized that previous reports of an increased incidence of schizophrenia among Moroccan–Dutch people in the Netherlands were due to cross-cultural bias. They examined first-onset cases using a “culturally sensitive” version of the Comprehensive Assessment of Sympto...

AIMS To determine the variability of the prion protein gene (PRNP) in goats from Northern and Southern Italy. METHODS AND RESULTS Genomic DNA isolated from goat blood was polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified for the coding region of the PRNP gene and then sequenced. In total, 13 polymorphic sites were identified: G37V, T110P, G127S, M137I, I142M, I142T, H143R, R154H, P168Q, T194P, R211Q,...

Near-shore waters along the northwest African margin are characterized by coastal upwelling and represent one of the world's major upwelling regions. Sea surface temperature (SST) records from Moroccan sediment cores, extending back 2500 years, reveal anomalous and unprecedented cooling during the 20th century, which is consistent with increased upwelling. Upwelling-driven SSTs also vary out of...

Genetic characterization, diversity analysis and estimate of the genetic relationship among varieties using functional and random DNA markers linked to agronomic traits can provide relevant guidelines in selecting parents and designing new breeding strategies for marker-assisted wheat cultivar improvement. Here, we characterize 20 Moroccan and 19 exotic bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultiv...

BACKGROUND Ethnic minorities living in Western societies may have a higher prevalence of diabetes. We investigated whether the prevalence of diabetes among Turkish and Moroccan migrants differs from the indigenous urban population in the Netherlands, and whether these differences can be explained by differences in risk factors. METHODS In 2004 a general health survey, stratified by ethnicity ...

This communication reports full genome sequencing of the bluetongue virus-1 (BTV-1) isolate MKD20/08/Ind from goat in northern India. The total BTV-1 genome size was found to be 19,190bp. A comparison study between the Indian isolate and other global isolates revealed that it belongs to the 'Eastern' BTV topotype. The full genome sequence of BTV-1 will provide vital information on its geographi...

UNLABELLED Previous research has shown discrepancies between a standard diagnostic interview for schizophrenia (CASH) and a culture sensitive version of this instrument (CASH-CS) in Moroccan patients. More specifically we showed that among Moroccan immigrants the CASH-CS resulted in fewer patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia compared with diagnoses based on the CASH, whereas for Native Du...
