Can people categorize the sex of neonate faces? Our experiment tested the sex categorization of neonate faces by adult participants. We used a set of 120 Caucasian faces (adults and 4-day-old neonates) that were presented just once to a large sample of participants. A computational model of low-level visual processing, based on Gabor filters, was used to explore the relation between spatial-fre...

In-utero transmission of rubella virus during pregnancy leads to congenital Rubella syndrome (CRS), which is characterized by cataracts, deafness and sensorineural hearing loss. While the nuclear cataract is the most frequently occurring abnormality, basal ganglia calcification is a rarer manifestation. The Risk of fetal transmission of rubella virus is highest during the first 12 weeks of gest...

OBJECTIVE We estimated the extent to which Canadian expectant parents would seek medical care in a febrile neonate (age 30 days or less). We also evaluated expectant parents' knowledge of signs and symptoms of fever in a neonate, and explored the actions Canadian expectant parents would take to optimize the health of their child. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional survey of a sample of ex...

This study examines the functional implications of postnatal changes in the expression of the mitochondrial transporter protein, 2-oxoglutarate-malate carrier (OMC). Online (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance ((13)C NMR) measurements of isotope kinetics in hearts from neonate (3-4 days) and adult rabbits provided tricarboxylic acid cycle flux rates and flux rates through OMC. Neonate and adult hea...

OBJECTIVE Several mechanisms of disease have been implicated in the pathophysiology of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) including an anti-angiogenic state, and an exaggerated intravascular pro-inflammatory response. Adiponectin plays a role in a wide range of biological activities including those that have been implicated in the pathophysiology SGA. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine i...

Contractile mechanisms of different parts of the gut in adult and neonate may not be identical due to developmental processes. The present study was undertaken to investigate acetylcholine (ACh) and histamine induced contractile responses of colon and rectum in adult and neonatal albino rats. Contractile responses were recorded from isolated in vitro preparations. The dose-response curve for AC...

Introduction Left atrial thrombus is a rare finding in a neonate. In the previous literature, atrial thrombi have been associated with catheter placement or congenital heart disease in a preterm infant. Case We report the case of a full-term neonate with no known risk factors found to have a left atrial thrombus. The neonate was born at 38 weeks' gestation to a 31-year-old female via cesarean s...

Ovarian cyst are the most common intra-abdominal cyst in female neonate. With the help of ultrasound one can make an antenatal diagnosis. We present one such neonate, she was managed by laparoscopic excision. We conclude that neonatal laparoscopy is technically feasible for management of such cysts.

Abdominal wall defects are associated with other intra-abdominal anomalies. We report two neonates with omphalocele associated with intra-abdominal anomalies. One neonate had multicystic kidney. Other neonate had duplication cyst of ileum which was missed during initial closure in neonatal life.
