In April 2014, poor fertility in a major commercial goose breeder operation in California triggered the submission of six live affected Toulouse ganders ( Anser anser ) to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory, Turlock branch (University of California-Davis). Toulouse were principally affected among all breeds, and their egg fertility dropped from 65.7% to less than 33.9% in t...

Contagious keratoconjunctivitis is a rather common disease in Norwegian sheep. Since the knowledge of its aetiology is limited, the present study was performed to determine the microorganisms involved. Local veterinarians throughout the country collected conjunctival swabs from both sick (n = 43) and healthy (n = 42) sheep on 15 farms with outbreaks of ovine keratoconjunctivitis, and further fr...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of successful treatment for Bartonella spp, Mycoplasma hemofelis or Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum infection of cats on results of diagnostic test results commonly available to veterinary practitioners through commercial diagnostic laboratories. Evidence of infection or exposure to Bartonella spp, M hemofelis or Candidatus M. haemominutum...

BACKGROUND Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is usually self-limited, but some fulminant cases are fatal, even when occurring in previously healthy individuals. It can also be the cause of overwhelming postsplenectomy infection (OPSI). CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of OPSI in a 41-year-old woman with hypersplenism associated with hepatitis B cirrhosis. We detected a significant Mycoplasma ...

In an examination of arginine-utilizing Mycoplasma species, simple fluorogenic and chromogenic tests were used to demonstrate high levels of arginine aminopeptidase activity in unwashed, unconcentrated broth and agar cultures in all strains of 5 species and low levels of activity in all strains of 14 species. Four species contained strains which exhibited either high or low levels of activity.

The energy-generating pathways of Mycoplasma spp. are diverse. Thus, it was predicted that the ability of inhibitors of these pathways to block growth would vary among species. This prediction was tested with 14 Mycoplasma species and potential inhibitors. The greatest differentiation among test species was obtained using fluoride, iodoacetate (IAA), beta-fluoropyruvate (FP), cibacron blue (CB)...

The 2002 NAHM's Dairy Survey indicated that 87.2% of dairy farms in the United States feed waste milk to their neonatal calves. Although cost-effective, this practice can lead to increased calf morbidity and mortality due to ingestion of pathogenic agents. In an effort to reduce the risk of infection, dairy producers are implementing on-farm pasteurization of the waste milk as a control procedu...

Seventeen monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against Mycoplasma mycoides ssp. mycoides small colony type (Mmm SC), the causative agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), were partially characterised. Six MAbs recognising a main protein of 70 kDa and showing reciprocal competition were found to be specific for Mmm SC, while the other MAbs showed different patterns of reactivity with M...

BACKGROUND Vector-borne diseases of dogs in Australian Aboriginal communities are relatively unexplored. These dogs represent a unique group with variable ecto- and endo-parasitic burdens, nutritional stresses and a general lack of veterinary intervention. We investigated haemoprotozoal and bacterial pathogen prevalences in relation to erythrocyte and platelet numbers in dogs from North-West Ne...

Mycoplasma spp., sterol and fatty acid auxotrophs, are conventionally grown in complex media containing high concentrations of serum. Serum supplies the required lipids, but its presence complicates studies on the metabolism and antigenicity of mycoplasmas as well as the membrane dynamics of these organisms. In the present work, fetal bovine serum was replaced with dilipidated albumin and lipos...
