The characteristics of nine children with community acquired pneumonia with evidence of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae coinfection are described.
A previously fit 48-year-old man was admitted with an acute respiratory failure due to mycoplasma pneumonia that was confirmed by raised mycoplasma titre on complement fixation test. It was also associated with disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. The patient made a full recovery but required intermittent positive pressure ventilation.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of clarithromycin and erythromycin in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia in children. METHODS Children with community-acquired pneumonia were randomly assigned to receive 10-day regimens of either clarithromycin 15 mg/kg/day, twice a day, or erythromycin 30-50 mg/kg/day, four times daily. RESULTS A total ...
Hampl J., J. Tomanek, L. Rodak, F. Kuksa and M. Sedlacek: Preparation and Testing of Antigens for the Demo7JStration of Mycoplasma Antibodies in Pigs by a Solid-Phase Radioimmunoassay. Acta vet. Brno. 50, 1981: 67-72. Three types of antigen, namely corpuscular, disaggregated with sodium dodecyl sulphate and disaggregated by sonication, were prepared from Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Mycoplasma ...
Infections with Mycoplasma bovis can result in several syndromes of importance for dairy and beef cattle of all ages. These diseases continue to require the attention of practitioners due to poor response to treatment and the marginal effectiveness of prophylaxis. We explore here parameters of transmission of the infections, and how practitioners can use this knowledge to develop management str...
An outbreak of severe respiratory disease in a goat herd was associated with Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, Mycoplasma arginini, Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida with mortality rates exceeding 20% in kids. Post mortem features in affected kids included severe pleuropneumonia, lung consolidation, large quantities of pleural fluid and pericarditis. This is the first report of atypical ...
We report a case of acute methemoglobinemia and anemia in a patient with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. We suggest that M. pneumoniae secretes a putative protein that can induce methemoglobin in red blood cells. Thus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae may induce methemoglobinemia in patients who have low oxygen saturation and anemia.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae has been associated with respiratory tract infections. Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia-related pleural effusion is rarely reported. Extra-pulmonary abnormalities such as encephalitis, myocarditis, glomerulonephritis, and myringitis have been reported. However pulmonary manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus include pneumonitis, pleurisy, interstitial lung disease, ...
The organism Mycoplasma pneumoniae is responsible for both upper and lower respiratory infections in man. ?n 1974 and 1975 there was an epidemic of mycoplasma infection in the British Isles and many cases Were indentified in the Bristol area. It is certain that many were not diagnosed and that appropriate treatment was not given. It therefore seems opportune to review the features of this infec...
Bovine respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma bovis is a major health problem of cattle worldwide. It inflicts considerable financial losses on beef herds and is the most common cause of mortality in dairy cattle. Bacteriological examination of 35 nasal cavity samples from calves younger than three months of age identified Mycoplasma bovis in eight (22.9%) samples. These cattle were followed ...
