A mosquito needs to bite at least twice for malaria transmission to occur: once to acquire parasites and, after these parasites complete their development in their mosquito host, once to transmit the parasites to the next vertebrate host. Here we investigate the relationship between temperature, parasite development, and biting frequency in a mosquito-rodent malaria model system. We show that t...

me about the mode of transmission of Wuchereria bancrojti. I understood that it was through the bite of an infected mosquito (Culex) larva passing through the bite puncture though capable of penetrating the healthy skin. I have just read in the ' Science and Practice of, Surgery', 1948 ed. (vol. I, p. 258) by Romanis and Mitchiner, that the infection is through drinking water in which the bodie...

Scaling up of insecticide treated nets has contributed to a substantial malaria decline. However, some malaria vectors, and most arbovirus vectors, bite outdoors and in the early evening. Therefore, topically applied insect repellents may provide crucial additional protection against mosquito-borne pathogens. Among topical repellents, DEET is the most commonly used, followed by others such as p...

BACKGROUND The worldwide threat of arthropod-transmitted diseases, with their associated morbidity and mortality, underscores the need for effective insect repellents. Multiple chemical, botanical, and "alternative" repellent products are marketed to consumers. We sought to determine which products available in the United States provide reliable and prolonged complete protection from mosquito b...

While probing host skin to search for blood vessels, the female Anopheles mosquito delivers Plasmodium parasites in the presence of saliva. Saliva from various blood-feeding vectors which contains several pharmacologically active components is believed to facilitate blood feeding as well as parasite transmission to the host. Recently, we found that mosquito saliva has the capacity to activate d...

BACKGROUND General knowledge of at risk people regarding malaria is key element to facilitate appropriate treatment and prevention behaviours. The aim of this study was to assess the family heads' understanding of malaria transmission, signs and symptoms, and preventive measures in malaria-affected districts of Iran. METHOD In 2009 in a cluster randomized cross-sectional survey data were coll...

Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV) is a vector-borne disease that spreads from the bite of an infected Mosquito to humans and resembles dengue virus in its transmission mode. This rampant Upper Midwest regions US some provinces Canada. Research done previously suggests clinical diagnosis can be accomplished by testing serum isolated blood patients who test positive for virus. Real-time RT PCR, rapid ...

Hypersensitivity to mosquito bites (HMB) is characterized by intense skin reactions at bite sites. The pathogenesis of HMB might be related to clonal lymphoproliferation of Epstein-Barr virus DNA-positive natural killer (NK) cells. We report the first case of HMB possibly associated with NK cell-derived large granular lymphocyte (NK-LGL) lymphocytosis in Korea.

Hypersensitivity to mosquito bites (HMB) is a rare disease characterized by intense skin reactions such as bulla and necrotic ulcerations at bite sites, accompanied by general symptoms such as high-grade fever and malaise occurred after mosquito bites. It has been suggested that HMB is associated with chronic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and natural killer (NK) cell leukemia/lymphoma. We ...

Background: Mosquito behaviours including the degree to which they bite inside houses or outside is a crucial determinant of human exposure to malaria. Whilst seasonality in mosquito vector abundance is well documented, much less is known about the impact of climate on mosquito behaviour. We investigated how variations in household microclimate affect outdoor-biting by malaria vectors, Anophele...
