This panel discusses the decline in the information systems field and argues that an emphasis on the major transformations enabled by technology will help rekindle interest and excitement about the technology. We will discuss a documentary on IT-enabled transformations that the Smith School at the University of Maryland is co-producing with Maryland Public Television for viewing on public telev...
Bike sharing systems consist of a fleet of bikes placed in a network of docking stations. These bikes can then be rented and returned to any of the docking stations after usage. Predicting unrealized bike demand at locations currently without bike stations is important for effectively designing and expanding bike sharing systems. We predict pairwise bike demand for New York City’s Citi Bike sys...
The present paper is a five-week content analysis of crime stories reported on television news. The sample consists of three nightly newscasts available on a rural, midwestern cable system. Included are nightly newscasts from a national network, a big city television station, and a small town channel. Findings from this exploratory study show that these three sources of television news differ s...
This paper describes the advances being made in space robotics simulation to meet the challenges of astronaut training and space operations support. This simulator (MOTS) is being used to train International Space Station astronauts to perform on-orbit robotics tasks. It also supports mission planning and task verification in an operationally representative environment. The simulator supports c...
To enhance the system throughput and to extend coverage of IEEE 802.16 networks, relay stations can be implemented. If a user station is attached to the base station (BS) through several relays stations (RS), a multi-hop communication occurs. To enable multi-hop communication, the IEEE 802.16j standard proposes two approaches how RSs can be implemented into the network. The first approach group...
Background: The neurological examination is considered to be complex and contributes to the phenomenon of "neurophobia". It is traditionally taught in small groups by residents ("traditional concept"), making the learning success partially dependent on the resident's level of clinical training, didactic education and personal motivation. Aim of this study was to examine the effects of a newly d...
Recent years have witnessed tremendous developments regarding wireless network access. In this paper emphasis is given to methods for the design of in-door Coded Division Multiple Access (CDMA) based wireless networks and Fixed Wireless (e.g. Wireless Local Loop WLL) networks, which are referred to as wireless access networks. In these networks, two main types of network components are consider...
We give a simplified proof of regularizing effects for first-order Hamilton-Jacobi Equations of the form ut+H(x, t, Du) = 0 in R ×(0,+∞) in the case where the idea is to first estimate ut. As a consequence, we have a Lipschitz regularity in space and time for coercive Hamiltonians and, for hypo-elliptic Hamiltonians, we also have an Hölder regularizing effect in space following a result of L. C...
In a laboratory experiment we show that minimum wages have significant and lasting effects on subjects’ reservation wages. The temporary introduction of a minimum wage leads to a rise in subjects’ reservation wages which persists even after the minimum wage has been removed. Firms are therefore forced to pay higher wages after the removal of the minimum wage than before its introduction. As a c...
