Zero-valent iron (Fe0)-based permeable reactive barrier treatment has been generating great interest for passive groundwater remediation, yet few studies have paid particular attention to the microbial activity and characteristics within and in the vicinity of the Fe0-barrier matrix. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the microbial population and community composition in the reducing ...

A survey of 100 swimming pools has been conducted to assess the effectiveness of disinfection practices against various microorganisms and to check compliance with recommended chlorine levels and pH. Microbiological quality was assessed from densities of total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, total colony counts, and the presence or absence of amoebae, including the path...

Six patients (46%) had febrile neutropenia during the course of R. radiobacter infection. The majority (54%) of infections were catheter-related bacteremia, and 92% of infections were hospital acquired. All the pati...

Bacteremia caused by Alcaligenes xylosoxidans is rare. Between 1999 and 2002, 12 cases of bacteremia caused by A. xylosoxidans were diagnosed at a tertiary referral center in central Taiwan. The clinical features of these patients and the antimicrobial susceptibilities and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) pattern of their blood isolates were studied. All infections were acquired nosocomi...

Recurrent Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscesses (KLAs) are rarely reported. Six cases of recurrent KLAs are characterized. Most of the patients had diabetes and K1 serotype KLAs. All of the isolates were uniformly susceptible to cefazolin. Distinct molecular fingerprints were found for the strains isolated from both primary and recurrent KLAs.

Although hemodialysis-associated pneumonia (HDAP) was included among the healthcare-associated pneumonias (HCAP) in the 2005 American Thoracic Society (ATS)/Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) guideline, little information relevant to clinical epidemiology, especially microbiological characteristics, is available. This study aimed to reveal microbiological characteristics and clinical...
