The malposition of a self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) placed fully inside the bile duct may be disastrous, and adjusting the position of a malpositioned stent can be difficult or impossible. Fully-covered SEMSs were designed mainly to treat benign biliary strictures and to be removable [1]. The removal process can however be difficult if the stent is placed fully inside the bile duct. Graspin...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES This article examines the cost impact associated with the utilization of the Taxus drug eluting stent versus a conventional bare-metal stent for percutaneous coronary interventions in a Spanish hospital setting. METHODS A decision analysis model has been developed to compare the intervention and re-hospitalization costs at 12 and 24 months post-intervention. The an...

Introduction Stent implantation is an effective therapy for aortic coarctation (CoA) in adolescents and adults. Aim To present a unique group of patients with native coarctation of the aorta older than or equal to 46 years treated with bare metal or covered stents. Material and methods Since 2002 we have performed stent implantations by applying bare metal stents or covered stents using fem...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Stent-assisted coiling is routinely used for the endovascular treatment of complex or wide-neck intracranial aneurysms. However, in-stent thrombosis, thromboembolic events, and ischemic complications remain a major concern associated with stent implants. Therefore, a novel low-profile neurovascular stent with a bare metal surface was investigated with regard to thrombogen...

BACKGROUND Paclitaxel-eluting stents decrease angiographic and clinical restenosis following percutaneous coronary intervention compared to bare metal stents. TAXUS Element is a third-generation paclitaxel-eluting stent which incorporates a novel, thinner-strut, platinum-enriched metal alloy platform. The stent is intended to have enhanced radiopacity and improved deliverability compared to oth...

Current guidelines recommend management of benign gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) with serial dilations. Self-expanding metal stents are effective, but their use is complicated by high rates of migration. We present two cases from our institution where a uniquely designed, lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) was successfully used to alleviate benign GOO without stent migration.

BACKGROUND Noncardiac surgery performed after coronary stent implantation is associated with an increased risk of stent thrombosis, myocardial infarction, and death. The influence of stent type and period of risk still have to be defined. METHODS AND RESULTS We linked the Scottish Coronary Revascularisation Register with hospital admission data to undertake a Scotland-wide retrospective cohor...

BACKGROUND Fractional flow reserve predicts cardiac events after coronary stent implantation. The aim of the present study was to assess the 9-month angiographic in-stent restenosis rate in the setting of optimal stenting and a persisting gradient distal to the stent as assessed by a pressure wire pullback recording in the entire length of the artery. METHODS AND RESULTS In 98 patients with a...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts using FLUENCY expanded polytetraf luoroethylene (PTFE)-covered stents and the effect on the patency rate. A total of 114 cirrhotic patients who were treated by transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent shunt (TIPS) placement using a FLUENCY expanded, PTFE-covered stent were enrolled in th...

Over half of patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer are unsuitable for curative resection. A significant proportion of these patients will subsequently require palliative stenting to alleviate dysphagia. There is growing consensus in the literature that the deployment of a Self-Expanding Metal Stent is the optimum stenting strategy; however, it remains unclear whether covered or uncovered me...
