We reveal the unique and fundamental advantage of inerter-based elastic metamaterials by a comparative study among different configurations. When embedded inerter is connected to matrix material on both ends, metamaterial shows definite superiority in forming band gap ultra-low frequency - equivalently ultra-long wavelength regime, where unit cell size can be four or more orders magnitude small...

Shock compression experiments were performed to investigate optical changes in GaP under uniaxial strain. Low-temperature transmission spectra of sulphur-doped GaP samples were obtained at longitudinal stresses up to 5 GPa for shock wave loading along the 100 , 111 , and 110 orientations. At low uniaxial strains, changes in the band-gap absorption edge were consistent with the calculated band-g...

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), defined as nanometer-wide strips of graphene, have attracted increasing attention as promising candidates for next-generation semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate a bottom-up strategy toward novel low band gap GNRs (Eg = 1.70 eV) with a well-defined cove-type periphery both in solution and on a solid substrate surface with chrysene as the key monomer. Corresponding ...

High-frequency (optical) and low-frequency (static) dielectric constant versus band gap trends, as well as index of refraction versus band gap trends are plotted for 107 inorganic semiconductors and insulators. These plots are describable via power-law fitting. Dielectric screening trends that emerge from this analysis have important optical and electronic implications. For example, barrier low...

We demonstrate numerically a 2-D nanostructured design for light trapping in a low band-gap polymer solar cell. Finite element method simulations are used to study the effect of varying nanostructure periodicity, height, and shape on active layer absorption. Maintaining a constant active layer thickness of 100 nm we observe an enhancement in solar absorption of almost 40% relative to a planar c...

Conducting polymers have infiltrated our day to day life with a wide range of products extending from the most common consumer goods to highly specialized applications in space, aeronautics and electronics. In this article, current efforts to design novel conducting polymers with the desired conduction properties are reviewed. Some recent results on the electronic structure and conduction prope...

We report the first synthesis of a fused germaindacenodithiophene monomer and its polymerisation with 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole by Suzuki polycondensation. The resulting polymer, PGeTPTBT, is semicrystalline, despite the presence of four bulky 2-ethylhexyl groups. Blends with P(70)CBM afford solar cells with efficiencies of 5.02%.
