We present experimental results and a numerical model confirming that surface plasmons can resonantly enhance light transmission through a corrugated metal film. A new interpretation in terms of plasmon-assisted light tunneling is given to recent experiments on light penetration through periodic subwavelength holes in a thin metal film. We designed a narrow-band filter suitable for applications...

We discuss how light can be efficiently bent by nanoscale-width slit waveguides in metals. The discussion is based on accurate numerical solutions of Maxwell's equations. Our results, using a realistic model for silver at optical wavelengths, show that good right-angle bending transmission can be achieved for wavelengths lambda> 600 nm. An approximate stop-band at lower wavelengths also occurs,...

Metal-dielectric multilayered metamaterials are proposed to work as wideband spectral-selective emitters/absorbers due to the topological change in isofrequency contour around the epsilon-near-zero point. By setting the transition at the border between the visible and IR ranges, the metal-dielectric multilayered metamaterials become good absorbers/emitters for visible light and good reflectors ...

Engineered optoelectronic surfaces must control both the flow of light and the flow of electrons at an interface; however, nanostructures for photon and electron management have typically been studied and optimized separately. In this work, we unify these concepts in a new hybrid metal-semiconductor surface that offers both strong light absorption and high electrical conductivity. We use metal-...

The interaction of metal-molecule-metal junctions with light is considered within a simple generic model. We show, for the first time, that light-induced current in unbiased junctions can take place when the bridging molecule is characterized by a strong charge-transfer transition. The same model shows current-induced light emission under potential bias that exceeds the molecular excitation ene...

The resonance behavior of metal transmission gratings and its impact on the response of metal-semiconductor-metal ~MSM! photodetectors have been studied experimentally and theoretically. The metal gratings, with finger spacings in the subwavelength region of the visible light, were fabricated using e-beam lithography and lift-off. Strong resonances have been observed only in the S polarization....

Novel conical reflection of light by a thick three-layered metal-clad optical waveguide is observed. A symmetrical metal-cladding optical waveguide is used, which exhibits extraordinary conical reflection during free-space coupling of light to the waveguide. The phenomenon is attributed to the leakage of excited ultrahigh-order guided modes and their inter- and intramode coupling interaction.

A simple and effective strategy is developed to realize visible light-driven heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis. A chiral organic molecule, which only has very weak catalytic activity in asymmetric α-alkylation of aldehydes under visible light, is utilized as the ligand to coordinate with different types of metal ions, including Zn2+, Zr4+, and Ti4+, for construction of crystalline metal organi...

The observation of an unusual light-induced agglomeration phenomenon that occurs besides the trapping of the gold nanoparticles aggregates (GNAs) has been observed. The observed agglomerate has a 60-100 μm donut-shaped metal microstructure with the rate of formation dependent on the laser power used. In this paper, the forces involved and the mechanism of this further agglomeration phenomenon a...
