We describe two cases of degenerative intraspinal cyst of the cervical spine that caused a gradually progressive myelopathy. One case had a cyst that arose from the facet joint and the other case had a cyst that formed in the ligamentum flavum. The symptoms improved immediately after posterior decompression by cystectomy with laminoplasty.
Neurogenic claudication resulting from focal hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum in the lumbar spine due to ochronotic deposits has not been reported till date. We report a 72-year-old patient with thoracic myelopathy due to isolated ossification of the ligamentum flavum at T9-T10. Severe paraparesis had developed before the lesion was identified when thinning of a segment of the lower thoracic spinal cord was suspected on a second MRI examination. The diagnosis was then established by CT.
