Since the mechanisms of the developmental processes of tumors remain unclear, early detection and early treatment of the tumors is necessary to save patients with malignant tumors. Therapies currently available to patients are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. However, there are many patients who cannot be saved by such therapies. In this study, we found the common features of various tu...

Asthma is a complex syndrome characterized by variable obstruction to airflow, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and inflammation. The initiation and propagation of airway inflammation arises from many factors, including mediators generated by resident airway cells and recruited leukocytes (1). Leukotrienes are biologically active fatty acids derived from the oxidative metabolism of arachidonic ac...

BACKGROUND While clinical trials with antileukotrienes have shown overall beneficial effects in asthma, the factors that determine leukotriene dependent asthma are still unclear. A study was undertaken to determine whether or not leukotriene responsiveness in the airways correlates with endogenous leukotriene biosynthesis. METHODS Bronchial responsiveness to leukotriene (LT) D4 was assessed a...

Proper care of patients with asthma involves the triad of systematic chronic care plans, self-management support, and appropriate medical therapy. Controller medications (inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting beta2 agonists, and leukotriene receptor antagonists) are the foundation of care for persistent asthma and should be taken daily on a long-term basis to achieve and maintain control of symp...

The contributions made by the various eicosanoids, PAF, the HETES and the lipoxins to the pathophysiology of glomerulonephritis is reviewed. A case can be made for clinical trials of PAF, leukotriene and thromboxane antagonists. Combined thromboxane synthetase and thromboxane receptor antagonism would seem to be the more efficacious approach for the various disease entities.

BACKGROUND/AIMS Cysteinyl-containing leukotrienes seem to exert a cholestatic effect. However, leukotriene inhibitors were found to reduce bile salt efflux in isolated rat hepatocytes, suggesting a role for leukotrienes in bile flow formation. METHODS In the isolated rat liver, the effects of two different concentrations of leukotriene C4 on bile flow and bile salt excretion are analyzed, as ...

: This review focuses on aspirin-exacerbated asthma (AEA). The review includes historical perspective of aspirin, prevalence, pathogenesis, clinical features and treatment of AEA. The pathogenesis of AEA involves the cyclooxygenase and lipooxygenase pathway. Aspirin affects both of these pathways by inhibiting the enzyme cycooxygenase-1 (COX-1). Inhibition of COX-1 leads to a decrease in prosta...

Preschool wheeze is very common and often difficult to treat. Most children do not require any investigations; only a detailed history physical examination ensure an alternative diagnosis being missed; the differential diagnosis, hence investigation protocols for child in whom major illness suspected, shows geographical variation. The pattern of symptoms may be divided into episodic viral multi...
