Leptospirosis is a spirochetal bacterial infection of great public health importance. It has a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations which goes from subclinical infection and self-limited anicteric febrile illness (80-90% of all cases) to icteric leptospiropirosis known as Weil's disease. This is a severe disease characterized by hemorrhage, acute renal failure and jaundice. It is uncommon ...
In this paper we develop and analyze the model for the spread of Leptospirosis by age group in Thailand, between 1997 and 2010 by using mathematical modeling and computer simulation. Leptospirosis is caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. It is a zoonotic disease of global importance and an emerging health problem in Thailand. In Thailand, leptospirosis is a reportable diseas...
Symptoms of the early phase leptospirosis often are non-specific and can be a major problem in making a diagnosis of febrile illnesses. Rapid diagnosis of leptospirosis is of extreme importance, because antibiotic treatment provides greatest benefit when administered in early stage of the disease. Recombinant flagellin B (FlaB) gene (flaB) of Leptospira interrogans serovar Autumnalis strain Aki...
Pancytopaenia is a rare clinical presentation of severe leptospirosis. We would like to report a case of severe leptospirosis that progressed to pancytopaenia despite initial penicillin therapy. The patient needed a second course of antibiotic with doxycycline to improve his persistent symptoms and cytopaenia. Persistent pancytopaenia in severe leptospirosis and its management were reviewed.
Timely diagnosis of leptospirosis is important to ensure a favorable clinical outcome. The definitive serologic assay, the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), requires paired sera and is not useful for guiding early clinical management. The only screening test approved for use in the United States, the indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA), has not undergone extensive field evaluation. To ass...
BACKGROUND Dogs with leptospirosis show similar organ manifestations and disease course as human patients, including acute kidney injury and pulmonary hemorrhage, making this naturally-occurring infection a good animal model for human leptospirosis. Expression patterns of cytokines and enzymes have been correlated with disease manifestations and clinical outcome in humans and animals. The aim o...
Background and purpose: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Pulmonary involvement is common in these patients but it often has few clinical symptoms. Ïn some cases however, pulmonary leptospirosis can develop a severe respiratory involvement with high mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of lung involvement in leptosp...
Abstract Background and Objective: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis infectious disease that is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions and is caused by the pathogenic serovars of leptospires. Hence, we aimed at investigating the prevalence of antibodies against these bacteria in the blood samples of suspected leptospirosis. Material and Methods: the human serum samples (N = 130) were ...
Leptospirosis is one of the most widespread and pervasive zoonotic bacterial diseases worldwide. Current global estimates indicate that more than 500 000 cases of human disease occur annually and that under-reporting is likely to be substantial especially in endemic regions. Human leptospirosis, caused by infection with pathogenic Leptospira bacteria, can range from a mild, self-limiting or sub...
