Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe epileptic encephalopathy. Few current treatment options are effective in improving seizure control. This paper reviews the available treatments of LGS and discusses a new option in Canada, rufinamide. It is a wide spectrum anticonvulsant, approved in a number of countries for the treatment of LGS. In a randomized controlled trial in the LGS population, ...
PURPOSE There is currently no resective (potentially curative) surgical option that is useful in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Palliative procedures such as callosotomy (Cx), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) or deep brain stimulation have been offered. We compared the outcomes after Cx or VNS in two consecutive prospective cohorts of patients with generalised epilepsy. METHODS Twenty-fo...
A 14-year-old boy had suffered from intermittent acute hepatic porphyria, myoclonic convulsions and mental retardation (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome). The porphyria was treated by stopping the administration of phenobarbitone and phenytoin. Sodium valproate at a dose of 70 mg/kg per day lessened the severity and frequency of convulsive crises.
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a new therapeutic option for refractory epilepsy. We report a patient with Lennox-Gastaut-Syndrome (LGS) and a severe impairment of heart rate variability (HRV), we could demonstrate in our patient that HRV was improved by VNS.
Lennox-Gaustaut syndrome is an electroclinical epilepsy syndrome characterized by the triad of electroencephalogram showing diffuse slow spike-and-wave discharges and paroxysmal fast activity, multiple intractable seizure types, and cognitive impairment. The intractability to seizure medications and cognitive impairment gives rise to eventual institutionalized patient care. Only a small subset ...
Several plant species defend themselves indirectly from herbivores by producing herbivore-induced volatile compounds that attract the natural enemies of herbivores. Here we tested the effects of elevated atmospheric CO(2) (720 micromol mol(-1)) concentration on this indirect defense, physiological properties, and constitutive and induced emissions of white cabbage (Brassica oleracea ssp. capita...
