Leachates produced at the La Zoreda landfill in Asturias, Spain, were recirculated through a simulated landfill pilot plant. Prior to recirculation, three loads of different amounts of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) were added to the plant, forming in this way consecutive layers. When anaerobic digestion was almost completed, the leachates from the landfill were recirculated. After recirculation, ...

Whilst changes in freshwater assemblages along gradients of environmental stress have been relatively well studied, we know far less about intraspecific variation to these same stressors. A stressor common in fresh waters worldwide is leachates from terrestrial plants. Leachates alter the physiochemical environment of fresh waters by lowering pH and dissolved oxygen and also releasing toxic com...

The wood preservative chromated copper arsenate (CCA) contains hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and the conversion of Cr(VI) to trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] drives fixation of the treatment chemicals to the wood fibers. Since the toxicity of Cr depends on its valence state, an assessment of the Cr species occurring in CCA-treated wood, as well as leachates and ashes from CCA-treated wood, is helpfu...

Weathering of metal-sulfide minerals produces suites of variably soluble efflorescent sulfate salts at a number of localities in the eastern United States. The salts, which are present on mine wastes, tailings piles, and outcrops, include minerals that incorporate heavy metals in solid solution, primarily the highly soluble members of the melanterite, rozenite, epsomite, halotrichite, and copia...

Leachates from selected open dumpsites in Port Harcourt region were analysed for radiometrics and heavy metal parameters. For radiometrics, gamma ray spectroscope was used while Heavy parameters spectrophotometer. These compared among the of different study areas established international standard FEPA WHO/INIS used. Dumpsites leachates show mean potassium 40K(71.715± 0.3 Bq kgl-), Uranium 238U...

Bacterial leaching of an As-containing pyrite concentrate produced acidic (pH < 1) leachates. During the leaching, the bacteria solubilized both As and Fe, and these two elements were distributed in solution-phase and solid-phase products. Jarosite and scorodite were the exclusive crystalline products in precipitate samples from the bacterial leaching of the sulfide concentrate.

Background and Objective:Application of compost containing heavy metals can increase the concentration of metals in soil and groundwater. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate leaching lead, chromium, and cadmium from three soils (a sandy loam, a sandy clay loam and silt clay loam) amended with compost from the municipal solid waste. Material andMethod:First, the selected soils were...

We describe herein a useful model for assessing the environmental impact of the breakage of earthen dams used to retain leachate fluids. To create this model, we analyzed three parameters: (1) the characteristics of both the earthen dam and the leachate; (2) the behavior of the leachate cascade resulting from breakage of the dam; and (3) the environmental effect of the resulting pollution. To a...
