In this study, geochemical and particle size analyses of thirty-four street sediment samples collected from an urban environment around Guanabara Bay, shows highway run-off to be a potential source of heavy metals for the pollution of near-shore sedimentary deposits. Concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr and Ni were found to be higher in these sediments when compared to concentrations found ...

C. edentulus accounts for the major fishery resource in Guanabara Bay, but there are only few studies about its captures. This study analyzed the long term changes on C. edentulus catches in Guanabara Bay, focusing especially on temporal variation on capture effort, boat storage temperature, and fish price and size.We assessed the 2002-2011 database of fish landings at the pier of Rubi S.A., wit...

Pacific herring reproduce in the San Francisco Bay estuary during times of the year when suspended sediment loads are highest due to freshwater input, yet little is known about the effects of sediment on herring early life stages. During the first 2 h after eggs contacted water, embryos were adhesive and susceptible to having sediment particles attach permanently to the chorion. Treatment with ...

The Vibrionaceae (Vibrio) are a ubiquitous group of metabolically flexible marine bacteria that play important roles in biogeochemical cycling in the ocean. Despite this versatility, little is known about Vibrio diversity and abundances in upwelling regions. The seasonal dynamics of Vibrio populations was examined by analysis of 16S rRNA genes in Monterey Bay (MB), California from April 2006-Ap...

The transmission ecology of Phytophthora ramorum from bay laurel (Umbellularia californica) leaves was compared between mixed-evergreen and redwood forest types throughout winter and summer disease cycles in central, coastal California. In a preliminary multisite study, we found that abscission rates of infected leaves were higher at mixed-evergreen sites. In addition, final infection counts we...

We assess species composition, assemblage structure and distribution of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages from diverse substrates in Moreton Bay, South-East Queensland, Australia. Analysis of 47 surface sediment samples revealed 69 species, three distinct foraminiferal assemblages and six sub-assemblages. The assemblages from the western Bay are characterized by stress tolerant taxa and the...

A vibrio-bacteriophage system isolated from San Francisco Bay mud is described. The vibrio lyses readily in distilled water and appears to be a new species. In contact with the phage it becomes lysogenic and forms large clumps. The phage presents no unique features.
