This paper considers learning in an imperfectly competitive setting. By allowing an opponent a “head start," unsuccessful unilateral experimentation may jeopardize future sales and profits. We show that even in the absence of spillover and signalling effects, competition can inhibit the scope of learning, relative to a monopoly. JEL Classification Numbers: D83

This paper analyzes the effects of a potential spillover on technology transfer of a multinational enterprise and on the host country policy. In particular, we examine how both parties’ incentives can be controlled through the ownership structure in an international joint venture. In contrast to existing arguments we show that spillovers must not always have negative effects on technology trans...

Many firms believe that enterprise blogging forums can be used to help build the structured platform required for an environment that supports emergent innovation. While some employees tend to be 'consumers' of content created by others, some others contribute by acting as 'creators'. In this paper, we build and estimate a dynamic structural model towards understanding the mechanisms that incen...

Foreign direct investment has been considered a very important factor in the recent growth of Vietnam’s economy and thus far has drawn a great deal of concern from economic researchers in Vietnam. However, studies on the impacts of foreign direct investment on Vietnam’s economy, especially the technological spillovers, are still very scarce compared with other developing countries. This study m...

We review the econometric literature on measuring the returns to R&D. The theoretical frameworks that have been used are outlined, followed by an extensive discussion of measurement and econometric issues that arise when estimating the models. We then provide a series of tables summarizing the major results that have been obtained and conclude with a presentation of R&D spillover returns measur...

Farsighted stability of Chwe (1994) is discussed while attention is played on the computational framework of finding farsightedly stable coalition structures. The idea of farsightedness means that one should check for multi-step stability by comparing the profits of a coalition member after a series of deviations has come to an end. The deviation is possible only if players display a cooperate ...

In this study, we analyze firms’ membership in R&D (Research and Development) cooperation networks trough simulation methods. Our main research hypothesis is that the membership in cooperation networks is related to the degree of the knowledge spillover. The approach has two scenarios: cost symmetry and cost asymmetry. We first develop an analytical model with three stages: firstly, firms decid...

In this paper it is tested which of the various alternative approaches for constructing knowledge spillover pools suggested in existing literature measures the extent to which a rm can costlessly receive external knowledge best. Since knowledge spillovers are unmeasurable, a `goodness of t' measure is constructed using innovation survey data. It turns out that measures of the uncentered correla...
