Relativistic klystrons are being developed as an rf power source for high gradient accelerators applications which include large linear electronpositron colliders, compact accelerators, and FEL sources. In a relativistic klystron two-beam accelerator (RK-TBA), the drive beam passes through a large number of rf output structures. High conversion efficiency of electron beam energy to rf energy ca...
Klystrons capable of 75 MW output power at 11.4 GHz have been under development at SLAC for the last decade. The work has been part of the program to realize all the components necessary for the construction of the Next Linear Collider (NLC). The effort has produced a family of solenoid-focused 50 MW klystrons, which are currently powering a 0.5 GeV test accelerator at SLAC and several test sta...
The very first klystron in the XC series, (XCl), The SLAC design for a l-TeV collider (NLC) requires klystrons with a performance which is well beyond the state-of-the-art for microwave tubes in the United States or abroad. The electrical specifications for the NLC klystrons are not fully established, but they are approximately as follows: Frequency: Peak Power:
We propose experimentally simplified schemes of an optically dispersive interface region between two coupled free electron lasers (FELs), aimed at achieving a much broader gain bandwidth than in a conventional FEL or a conventional optical klystron composed of two separated FELs. The proposed schemes can universally enhance the gain of FELs, regardless of their design, when operated in the shor...
An overmoded photonic crystal resonant cavity with two dimensional dielectric lattice structures is proposed and simulated. The dominant mode is a higher-order TM03-like at the frequency of 31.14 GHz, the fundamental mode and most other modes are not supported by the cavity. The structure would be potential for application in accelerator, gyrotron and klystron in Ka-band. DOI: 10.2529/PIERS0610...
We describe design and testing of an induction cell with modulator for the Relativistic Klystron Two-Beam Accelerator (RK-TBA) concept, an option for the power source for the Next Linear Collider (NLC). FM Technologies has designed and built a prototype induction accelerator, which we call a re-accelerator, for a joint LLNL/LBNL TBA technology test-bed experiment.
This paper describes three embodiments of the ubitron (FEL) amplifier that will be analyzed for possible use on the NLC. The design frequency and power are 11.424 GHz and 200 MW peak rf output power. The baseline against which these conceptual designs are to be evaluated is the PPM-focused 50-MW SLAC klystron, which in simulation shows 65% efficiency. (See paper in this conference by Ken Eppley...
This thesis describes experimental research on a 17 GHz photocathode RF gun. This work represents the first operation of a photocathode electron gun at a frequency above 3 GHz. Photocathode RF guns have the potential for achieving record high values of electron beam quality. The 1 2 cell, π-mode, copper cavity was tested with 5-10 MW, 100 ns, 17 GHz pulses from a 24 MW Haimson Research Corp. kl...
Analytical formulations for the resonant frequency of a reentrant cavity klystron are available in literature only such cavities having single beam-tunnel. An improved analytical formulation has been proposed this paper calculation gap-capacitance and multiple beam-tunnels its effects on studied. The results obtained through analysis have validated against those from 3D electromagnetic field si...
The development of X-band klystrons at SLAC originated with the idea of building an X-band Linear Collider in the late 1980’s. Since then much effort has been expended in developing a reliable X-band Power source capable of delivering >50 MW RF power in pulse widths >1.5 μs. I will report on some of the technical issues and design strategies which have led to the current SLAC klystron designs.
