mono and bis hexamethylenetetramine iron(iii) chloride, fe(n c ,h ) ci (i) and fe(n c ,h ) cl (ii) were synthesized by the reaction of iron(iii) chloride and hexamethylenetetramine (hmta) in chloroform. chemical analysis and spectral results show the coordination of hmta to the iron(iii). electronic transition spectra of compound i and i1 were also studied in coordinating and noncoordinating so...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces a blue pigment called pyocyanin. In the presence of oxidizable substrates, bacteria reduce this pigment to a colorless product, leukopyocyanin. Pyocyanin can also be nonenzymatically reduced by NADH. Leukopyocyanin formed by cell- or NADH-mediated reduction nonenzymatically reduces oxygen or Fe(III). Pyocyanin-dependent iron reduction by whole bacterial cells was...

background: the incorporation of thallium-201 into 8-hydroxyquinoline was targeted for cell labeling due to interesting physical properties and wide availability of this nuclide as a single photon emission computed tomography (spect) radionuclide. materials and methods: thallium-201 (t1/2=3.04 d) in tl+ form was converted to tl3+ cation in presence of o3/6m hcl and di-isopropyl ether, controlle...

A mechanistic study is presented of the oxidative dehydrogenation of the iron(III) complex [Fe(III)L(3)](3+), 1, (L(3) = 1,9-bis(2'-pyridyl)-5-[(ethoxy-2''-pyridyl)methyl]-2,5,8-triazanonane) in ethanol in the presence of molecular oxygen. The product of the reaction was identified by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography as the identical monoimine complex [Fe(II)L(4)](2+), 2, (L(4) = 1,9-...

The formation of DNA-strand breaks was studied in cultured human lung cells (A 549) subjected to iron, either in the form of iron(III) citrate or in combination with the metal chelators ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), nitrilo triacetic acid (NTA), or 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ). After 15 min exposure to 5 microM iron(III) citrate or iron chelate, the cellular levels of iron were found t...

This work presents the first detailed study on mechanistic aspects of halide oxidation by non-heme iron complexes. We show that while iron(III)-hydroperoxo complexes oxidise halides via oxygen atom transfer, the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo complex reacts via electron transfer.
