We establish the classical Young inequality on time scales as follows: ab ≤ ∫ a 0 g (x) x + ∫ b 0 (g−1)σ (y) y if g ∈ Crd ([0, c],R) is strictly increasing with c > 0 and g(0) = 0, a ∈ [0, c], b ∈ [0, g(c)]. Using this inequality, we can extend Hőlder’s inequality and Minkowski’s inequality on time scales. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. MSC: primary 26D15

I analyze the effect of inequality on growth over different time-frames. In a large cross-country dataset for the period 1950-2007 I find evidence of a short-run (5-year periods) and medium-run (10-year periods) inverse-U relationship between inequality and growth. In the long-run (20-year periods), however, inequality has a negative effect on growth in poor countries, and a positive effect in ...

Despite the increasing prevalence of dual-earner couples, women still perform the bulk of domestic and parental tasks within the household. In this paper, we investigate the role of the parental model in the persistence of this gender inequality. We study the possible correlation between the domestic time of parents and their young adult co-resident children using the French time-use survey con...

BACKGROUND This study aims to explore young men's understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Ecuador, examining similarities and differences between how ordinary and activist young men conceptualize IPV against women. METHODS We conducted individual interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with 35 young men--five FGDs and five interviews with ordinary young men, and 11 interview...

Based on both animal and human studies, inequality in food intake and social instability has adverse effects on the health of individuals and the community. However, it is not known whether social instability, food deprivation and food inequality affect neuronal death and premature aging in young animals. To address this question, the effects of these adverse situations, histopathological chang...

This article focuses on neighborhood and geographic change arising with the first "selection" of an independent residential setting: the transition out of the family home. Data from two sources-the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, and the Panel Study of Income Dynamics-are used to provide complementary analyses of trajectories of change in geographic location and neighborh...

OBJECTIVE To investigate trends in health inequality among children and young people between 1999 and 2009, using outcomes consistent with the current NHS reforms. DESIGN/DATA Secondary analysis of participants aged 0-24 in the Health Surveys for England (HSE) undertaken in 1999, 2004, 2006 and 2009. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Changes in the absolute and relative risks of four health outcomes by...

The paper provides estimates of the effect of economic inequality on middle class well being in Switzerland. Economic well being is proxied by a person’s satisfaction with his/her income. Two inequality indicators are used, one standard (the Gini coefficient of the pre-tax income distribution) and one novel (the number of luxury car registrations per 1000 population). Identification is through ...

We consider the calibration of a Lévy process with American vanilla options. The price of an American vanilla option as a function of the maturity and the strike satisfies a forward in time linear complementarity problem involving a partial integro-differential operator. It leads to a variational inequality in a suitable weighted Sobolev space. Calibrating the Lévy process amounts to solving an...

This paper considers an optimal control perspective on dynamic power price problem where the load on the power-grid is controlled via price. The optimal regulatory price is characterized by inverse variational inequality in which the function value and the control variable are in the opposite positions of the classical variational inequality. Discrete and continuum models with load constraints ...
