Five children with atrial isomerism developed intestinal obstruction caused by malrotation of the gut. Other than asplenia, the extracardiac anomalies in these syndromes are rarely regarded as important as the outcome after intestinal surgery is poor. As cardiac treatment improves, early investigation and intervention for intestinal symptoms becomes more important.

A four-day-old boy presented with persistent bilious vomiting, bloody stained stool, and mild abdominal distension. Transabdominal ultrasound demonstrated a round soft-tissue mass-like structure in the right upper quadrant. With color Doppler ultrasound, the whirlpool sign was observed. Abdominal radiograph showed nonspecific findings. Upper gastrointestinal series revealed upper gastrointestin...

Infants with intestinal malrotation present with bilious emesis and the diagnosis is generally obtained by an upper gastrointestinal barium study. Malrotation is suspected if the ligament of Treitz is not positioned to the left of the vertebral body. Three patients were admitted to our department from March 2006 to May 2007, aged three weeks, one month and eight months, weighing 3,3.200 and 8 k...

Correspondence to: Mr SJ K Holmes. Introduction There are now sufficient data on the sonographic appearance ofnormal fetal gut to allow intestinal abnormality in the antenatal period to be diagnosed, although as yet relatively little attention has been paid to the implications for the child. We present eight such cases. Six children were found to have midgut atresia, three of whom had evidence ...

Radiologists must be able to recognize the imaging signs of intestinal malrotation because this condition can lead to potentially lethal complications such as midgut volvulus. The correct diagnosis depends on both high clinical suspicion and the radiologist's ability to recognize the specific signs of malrotation and the normal variants that can lead to the wrong diagnosis. Although the locatio...

INTRODUCTION Intestinal malrotation is a condition, which is predominantly recognised in childhood. Because of the relative rarity, there is a possibility that it can be missed in the routine clinical care of adults. This case highlights the need for a high index of suspicion for malrotation when things go wrong in routine procedures. This can be the reason for catastrophic sepsis in patients w...

Midgut malrotation is an anomaly of intestinal rotation which occurs during fetal development and usually presents in the neonatal period. It is rare for malrotation to present in adulthood. We present a case of malrotation in an adult female patient who presented with cramping generalized right abdominal pain and vomiting of one day duration. A computed tomography abdominal scan and upper gast...

Abstract Intestinal malrotation presents as an emergency in the neonate and within first year of life. Incomplete intestinal rotation may remain asymptomatic undiagnosed. Adult patients are usually diagnosed incidentally while being investigated for nonspecific abdominal symptoms. We report a case 43-year-old female who presented with 10-day history paraumbilical pain. Computed tomography demon...

Fetal intestinal volvulus without malrotation is a rare, life-threatening disease. Left untreated, hemorrhage from necrotic bowel tissue will lead to severe fetal anemia and even intrauterine death. We encountered a case of fetal intestinal volvulus causing severe anemia, which was diagnosed postnatally and successfully treated with surgical intervention.
