This work introduces capillary flow in paper microfluidics that features a flow rate Q that is constant in time, t, and independent of the viscosity of liquid sample, µ liquid : Q≠f(t, µ liquid). Compared to conventional paper microfluidics, we enclose the paper in solid walls and add a long and narrow air vent as outlet of the capillary pump, such that the flow rate is dominated by the downstr...

Water uptake of seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Limburg was monitored in a controlled atmosphere every day at solar noon for a period of 2 years. The imbibition rate, determined as the mean of five replicas, was related to the lunar cycle, maximal water uptake occurring between the new phases of the cycle. The monthly mean value of imbibition rate, calculated from the daily measurements, disp...

Air dry cotyledons of soybean (Glycine max Merr. var. Wayne) imbibe water rapidly for about 10 minutes followed by a slower, linear rate of uptake. Leakage of solutes out of the coytledon likewise shows an initial rapid period, followed by a slower, nearly linear rate after 5 to 10 minutes; both the rapid and the steady rate leakage are greater for initially drier seeds. Respiratory activity of...

Evaporation and gravity induced pinning in spontaneous imbibition are examined within a phase field formalism. Evaporation is introduced via a nonconserving term and gravity through a convective term that constrains the influx of liquid. Their effects are described by dimensionless coupling constants epsilon and g, respectively. From liquid conservation, the early time behavior of the average i...

water and soil salinity are two of the most important limiting factors in crop production. phosphatase enzymes are widely found in plants. phosphatase enzymes are responsible for de-phosphorylation of organic phosphate and altering it to mineral phosphate. germination experiments were conducted using two bread wheat cultivars, namely, iniya66 and ghods along with application of different nacl p...

Liquid-gas front propagation in disordered media exhibits unique behavior during a repeated series of drainage-imbibition displacements. Such complex can be simplified to single mesa-shaped defect, which provides new insight into the collective at macro-scale. We show how morphological difference imbibition and drainage is affected by capillary number wetting properties.

[1] We investigate experimentally the functional relationship between capillary pressure, Pc, wetting phase saturation, Sw, and interfacial area per volume between the wetting and nonwetting phases, awn, for drainage and imbibition processes in micromodels of twodimensional pore structures. Within the experimental and analysis error (around 10–15%), the resulting Pc-Sw-awn surfaces were the sam...

The present paper discusses the theoretical studies involved in the development of the differential equations which describe the spontaneous imbibition of water by an oil-saturated rock. The basic assumption underlying in the present investigation is that the oil and water form two immiscible liquid phases and the latter represents preferentially wetting phase. The Saturation of injected water ...

A new dynamic network model is used to investigate the effects of displacement rate and wettability on imbibition relative permeability. The network geometry and topology is representative of Berea sandstone. In contrast to existing quasi-static network models where snap-off, the major pore-scale trapping mechanism in imbibition, is suppressed by contact angle alone, the dynamic model introduce...
