We treated 15 patients by arthrodesis of the knee after removal of an infected total knee arthroplasty, using an Ilizarov ring fixator. Eight had a failed arthrodesis by another technique. The mean age of the patients was 75 years, the mean duration of retention of the frame was 28 weeks, the mean treatment time 51 weeks, and the mean follow-up 52 months. All but one knee fused at the first att...

To evaluate the results of the Ilizarov external fixator in the treatment of non-union post-high tibial osteotomy (HTO). Five non-unions, in four patients, following HTO were treated by Ilizarov fixation. Clinical outcome was assessed pre- and post-operatively by the Knee Society Clinical Rating System (KSCRS). Managing a segmental skeletal defect is a challenge, even more so if the combination of local infection with bone defect exacerbates the problem and provides an even more negative prognosis. Several techniques have been tried, among which skeletal allografts, autologous cortical or cancellous bone graft and vascularised bone graft, each with its limitation and success. In this study, we report ...

We report the results of Ilizarov gradual distraction to regain 6.7 cm of leg length in a severely contracted hip 11 months after a resection arthroplasty. Restoration of leg length allowed revision hip arthroplasty. At 24 months after the revision arthroplasty, the patient is ambulating independently and pain free. The use of Ilizarov gradual distraction restored leg length and facilitated pos...

Malalignment is associated with an increased rate of loosening of knee prostheses. We present a case of primary knee replacement failure due to pre-existing tibial deformity. Correction of the deformity and associated malalignment was undertaken using the Ilizarov osteotomy method prior to full knee revision surgery.
