PURPOSE Melatonin's function in human vision is far from understood, in part because of the lack of information on its cellular targets. Therefore, expression and localization of the MT(1) melatonin receptor in human retina was examined. METHODS Postmortem nonpathologic human eyes from nine donors were investigated, three by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for MT(1) a...
Stereo vision displays a well-known anisotropy: disparity-defined slant is easier to detect for rotations about a horizontal axis than about a vertical axis, and low-frequency sinusoidal depth corrugations are easier to detect when the corrugations are horizontal than when they are vertical. Here, we determined disparity thresholds for vertically and horizontally oriented depth corrugations wit...
BACKGROUND Strabismus surgery for congenital esotropia can be complicated by the development of a postoperative head tilt. PURPOSE To determine the pathophysiology of acquired head tilting following horizontal realignment of the eyes in children with congenital esotropia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective analysis of nine children with congenital esotropia who developed unexplained head t...
Catadioptric Omni-Directional Stereo Vision (ODSV) technology is the combination of omni-directional imaging and stereo vision, which has wide application potentials on robot vision and large-scale video surveillance [1-4]. Fig.1 gives the framework of ODSV technology, which includes four major parts: the design of omni-directional stereo vision imaging system, unwarping of omni-directional ste...
Purpose Insufficient accommodative response is assumed to result in myopia progression. We have investigated if the accommodative lag in myopes is different between a single vision lens (SVL) and the progressive addition lens PAL 2, clinically trialled for its ability to reduce progression of myopia, and if there exist differences in accommodative lag between PAL 2 and other PALs with the same ...
Background: Congenital absence of the superior oblique (SO) is a rare cause of strabismus. It should be suspected in a patient with a presumed diagnosis of SO palsy presenting with amblyopia, an unusually large vertical deviation, and a significant horizontal deviation. Case Report: We report a case of an infant presenting at five months of age with a significant right head tilt since birth and...
BACKGROUND Homonymous hemianopia (HH) is an anisotropic visual impairment characterized by the binocular inability to see one side of the visual field. Patients with HH often misperceive visual space. Here we investigated how HH affects visual motor control. METHODS AND FINDINGS Seven patients with complete HH and no neglect or cognitive decline and seven gender- and age-matched controls view...
Background: With an ever-increasing number of vehicles on the road, it is inevitable that drivers will need to call upon an increasing use of sensory and motor skills in order to negotiate safely through traffic. Vision is one of the major senses in human beings, and it is definitely necessary for safe driving. Approximately 95% of the sensory input to the brain required for driving comes from ...
A case is reported of a young man in whom blunt injury caused a horizontal corneal tear superiorly. Aniridia, aphakia, cyclodialysis with angle recession, minimal hyphaema, vitreous haemorrhage, choroidal rupture and striae, and scleral buckling resulted. Vision improved to 6/12+.
A novel approach to significantly increasing the field of view (FOV) of night vision goggles (NVGs) has been developed and demonstrated. This approach uses four image intensifier tubes instead of the usual two to produce a very wide 100 degree horizontal by about 4 0 degree vertical FOV. A conceptual working model, designated the Panoramic NVG, has been fabricated and evaluated.
