BACKGROUND Achieving optimal adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is necessary to attain viral suppression and hence optimal clinical outcome. Interruptions in antiretroviral therapy medication often occur, but a substantial proportion restart treatment. Long-term care engagement practices and clinical outcomes have not been described among cohorts of individuals on HAART i...
NOTE. Data are summarized from the article by Soriano et al. [1]. Methods Retrospective study of the clinical history of the HIV patients who died in the HJU since 1985. The patients were dived into three periods in accordance with the kind of therapy: 1985 to 1995 (preHAART), 1996 to 1999 (partial use of HAART), and 2000 to 2008 (HAART). To accurately evaluate the causes of death 160 patients were eliminated as their causes of death have not been clearly con...
BACKGROUND People who inject drugs (PWID) have increased risk of morbidity and mortality. We update and present estimates and trends of the prevalence of current PWID and PWID subpopulations in 96 US metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) for 1992-2007. Current estimates of PWID and PWID subpopulations will help target services and help to understand long-term health trends among PWID population...
We report the data from a long-term study of 31 human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-infected children who were treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy. A high proportion of the children had undetectable HIV-1 RNA levels. CD4+ T cell counts recovered and remained stable. Adverse events were observed frequently but were mostly mild.
OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of a peer-delivered intervention to promote short-term (6-month) and long-term (12-month) adherence to HAART in a Mozambican clinic population. DESIGN A 2-arm randomized controlled trial was conducted between October 2004 and June 2006. PARTICIPANTS Of 350 men and women (> or = 18 years) initiating HAART, 53.7% were female, and 97% were on 1 fixed-dose combi...
Many HIV-positive pregnant women and infants are still not receiving optimal services, preventing the goal of eliminating mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) and improving maternal child health overall. A Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) approach was utilized to address key challenges in delivery of prevention of MTCT (PMTCT) services including highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) uptake ...
After interruption of highly active antiretroviral therapy, 15 out of 53 patients with the X4 HIV strain had a significantly larger decrease in CD4(+) T cell count (P = 0.001) and shorter length of treatment interruption (P = 0.02) than patients with the R5 strain. At treatment resumption, HIV inferred tropism switched from the X4 strain to the R5 variant in 9 patients (60%). These patients had...
