BACKGROUND Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition with exertional heat stroke occurring frequently among soldiers and athletes. Because of its common occurrence, many military trainees practice preventive measures prior to any activity requiring severe exertion. Although it is said to be common in practice, different presentations of heat stroke are scarcely described in literature. CASE...

Although molecular mechanisms of heat stroke under physiological and pathological conditions have not yet been elucidated, a novel disease-associated gene encoding a calcium-binding protein, calsequestrin-1 (CASQ1), was suggested relevant based on results from a transgenic murine model. Here, we show the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of CASQ1 and physiological param...

1. Military recruits frequently succumb to exertional heat stroke during intensive training. Since widespread endothelial injury is often associated with exertional heat stroke, the relationship between changes in three circulating endothelial cell markers (angiotensin-converting enzyme, von Willebrand factor antigen and thrombomodulin) and exertional heat stroke was studied. 2. Twelve recruits...

Dexamethasone (DXM) is known as an immunosuppressive drug used for inflammation control. In the present study, we attempted to examine whether DXM administration could attenuate the hypercoagulable state and the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, improve arterial hypotension, cerebral ischemia and damage, and vital organ failure in a rat model of heat stroke. The results indicated th...

A 27 year old man presented with heat stroke following exposure to a humid, hot environment in the absence of physical exertion. Investigation revealed the presence of generalized anhydrosis without evidence of an associated disease. Although chronic idiopathic anhydrosis is rare, this entity should be considered in cases of unexplained heat intolerance and heat stroke.

The writer’s earlier paper on the mechanism of the cloud-to-ground lightning stroke was based on classical observational data. The report on the last 10 years’ observations of strokes from Monte San Salvatore by Berger and Vogelsanger using improved instrumentation calls for a reassessment of the theory and makes possible a tentative extension t o the intracloud stroke mechanisms. The salient n...

OBJECTIVE To assess the balance function of hemiplegic stroke patients and to investigate whether visual feedback rhythmic weight-shift training following acute stroke can decrease falls among patients with hemiplegic stroke. DESIGN A prospective study, using a Balance Master. SETTING Hospital-based rehabilitation units. SUBJECTS Fifty-two hemiplegic stroke patients (28 in the training gr...

A new scintigraphic count-based method for measuring absolute left ventricular volumes is presented. It is a fast and simple technique that allows geometrical assumptions to be avoided and is free of radiation attenuation corrections. This method requires the acquisition of an image of the left ventricle in the right anterior oblique projection and the collection of gated blood pool images in t...

In a previous issue of Clinical Science, Remmen et al. [1] addressed the question whether the Modelflow2 method can reliably assess cardiac output (CO) from an arterial pressure waveform without calibration. This question is not new, neither is the answer: it does not, as we have shown in a series of earlier studies [2–5]. If accurate absolute values are required, the methodology needs calibrat...

Heat stroke is caused by losing control of one's body temperature. It can be life threatening without proper treatment. In this case report, we describe a heat stroke patient treated with an external-cooling device, which is commonly used for therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest. A 67-year-old woman was found unconscious with spontaneous breathing in a sauna. Her body temperature was 40...
