We present a simple numerical algorithm to select the minimal subset of SNPs required to capture the diversity of haplotype blocks or other genetic loci. This algorithm can be used to quickly select the minimum SNP subset with no loss of haplotype information. In addition, the method can be used in a more aggressive mode to further reduce the original SNP set, with minimal loss of information. ...

Although Africa has played a central role in human evolutionary history, certain studies have suggested that not all contemporary human genetic diversity is of recent African origin. We investigated 35 simple polymorphic sites and one T(n) microsatellite in an 8-kb segment of the dystrophin gene. We found 86 haplotypes in 1,343 chromosomes from around the world. Although a classical out-of-Afri...

Studies on the genetic diversity and relatedness of zoo populations are crucial for implementing successful breeding programmes. The European wildcat, Felis s. silvestris, is subject to intensive conservation measures, including captive breeding and reintroduction. We here present the first systematic genetic analysis of the captive population of Felis s. silvestris in comparison with a natural...

The genus Semisulcospira is an economically and ecologically valuable freshwater resource. Among the species, coreana, forticosta tegulata are endemic to Korean peninsula gottschei widespread in Asia. Therefore, maintenance conservation of wild populations these snails important. We investigated genetic diversity population structure based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), ...

To clarify the genetic ancestry and the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity of the Lidia cattle breed, a 521-bp D-loop fragment was sequenced in 527 animals belonging to 70 herds distributed across 29 lineages. The mtDNA diversity recorded was similar to that seen for Middle Eastern breeds and greater than that recorded for the majority of European breeds. Haplotype T3 was the most common (81%)...

Euseius nicholsi (Ehara et Lee) is an important indigenous predator of many species of pest mites and insects in China. In this study, the genetic diversity of Euseius nicholsi among ten populations was investigated using coxI and ITS sequences from 145 individuals. This indicated the existence of 33 and 16 haplotypes, respectively. Most of the populations studied showed high levels of haplotyp...

Global patterns of human DNA sequence variation (haplotypes) defined by common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have important implications for identifying disease associations and human traits. Recent genetics research reveals that SNPs within certain haplotype blocks induce only a few distinct common haplotypes in the majority of the population. The existence of haplotype block structur...

BACKGROUND Sporotrichosis is a mycotic infectious disease that is generally acquired by traumatic inoculation of contaminated materials especially from plant debris or through bites and scratches from diseased animals, such as domestic cats. It affects the skin, lymphatic system, and other organs in the warm-blooded host. Etiological agents are embedded in the plant-associated order Ophiostomat...
