The electrocatalytic proton reduction activity of a Ni bis(diphosphine) (NiP) and a cobaloxime (CoP) catalyst has been studied in water in the presence of the gaseous inhibitors O2 and CO. CoP shows an appreciable tolerance towards O2, but its activity suffers severely in the presence of CO. In contrast, NiP is strongly inhibited by O2, but produces H2 under high CO concentrations.
National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD 20899-0001 The NIST sealed water calorimeter is intended for direct measurement of absorbed dose to water. This calorimeter was used for a series of approximately 3700 measurements to investigate the so-called heat defect, that is, anomalous endothermic or exothermic effects caused by dissolved gases. The three systems investigate...
Bimetallic nanoparticles (to approximately 11 nm diameter) of CuNi and CuCo were prepared by a new synthetic route and the 1:1 atomic ratio of their constituent elements confirmed using STEM-EDS at a single particle level. These nanoparticles, supported on the native oxide layer of a silicon wafer, were studied in situ in a series of reactive gas atmospheres (H2 --> CO or CO/H2 --> O2 --> H2) u...
The chemical oxidation of activated carbon by H2 O2 and H2 SO4 is investigated, structural and chemical modifications are characterized, and the materials are used as catalysts for the hydrolysis of cellulose. Treatment with H2 O2 enlarges the pore size and imparts functional groups such as phenols, lactones, and carboxylic acids. H2 SO4 treatment targets the edges of carbon sheets primarily, a...
Fe-N-C catalysts with high O2 reduction performance are crucial for displacing Pt in low-temperature fuel cells. However, insufficient understanding of which reaction steps are catalyzed by what sites limits their progress. The nature of sites were investigated that are active toward H2 O2 reduction, a key intermediate during indirect O2 reduction and a source of deactivation in fuel cells. Cat...
The chemistry of low pressure H2 + O2 discharges with different mixture ratios has been studied in a hollow cathode DC reactor. Neutral and positive ion distributions have been measured by mass spectrometry, and Langmuir probes have been used to provide charge densities and electron temperatures. A simple zero order kinetic model including neutral species and positive and negative ions, which t...
