In this study, we examined the immune response during gonococcal infection to the individual transferrin binding proteins by using a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Recombinant transferrin binding protein A (rTbpA) and rTbpB were purified under nondenaturing conditions for use as ELISA antigens. Sera and secretions from culture-positive individuals were analyzed for anti...

The prevalence of gonococcal infection of the rectum and pharynx in 239 consecutive women with gonorrhoea presenting as named contacts was 47% and 10% respectively. In 2% of all patients the rectum and pharynx were each the sole sites of infection. Treatment failure occurred in three patients given a single dose of aqueous procaine penicillin 2.4 megaunits intramuscularly, two of whom had recta...

A single oral dose of ciprofloxacin 500 mg was used to treat five men with gonococcal urethritis and five men with gonococcal proctitis, and all were cured. In a subsequent study the dose of ciprofloxacin was reduced to 250 mg, and 54 men with 57 gonococcal infections (47 urethral, seven rectal, and three pharyngeal) were treated; of the isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, four were penicillinas...

Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the cause of the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea, elicits low levels of specific Ig that decline rapidly after the bacteria are cleared. Reinfection with the same serovar can occur, and prior gonococcal infection does not alter the Ig response upon subsequent exposure, suggesting that protective immunity is not induced. The mucosal Ig response apparent during gon...

Infection with two strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae was found in paired cultures from 8.7% (6/69) of women who had infections of the cervix, rectum, or urethra. Paired gonococcal cultures from each patient were characterised by auxotyping, susceptibility to four antibiotics, and acrylamide gel electrophoresis patterns of the gonococcal cell proteins.
