OBJECTIVE The authors sought to demonstrate that schizophrenia is a heterogeneous group of heritable disorders caused by different genotypic networks that cause distinct clinical syndromes. METHOD In a large genome-wide association study of cases with schizophrenia and controls, the authors first identified sets of interacting single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that cluster within particu...
Many plant species have the capacity to regenerate asexually by resprouting from stem and leaf fragments. In the pan-tropical shrub genus Piper, this tendency is thought to be higher in shade-tolerant than light-demanding species, and to represent a trade-off with annual seed production. Here we use molecular markers to identify clones in five Piper species varying in light requirements. We tes...
BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most serious health problems in Myanmar. Because TB drug resistance is associated with genetic mutation(s) relevant to responses to each drug, genotypic methods for detecting these mutations have been proposed to overcome the limitations of classic phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (DST). We explored the current estimates of drug-resistant TB and ...
To address the role of insect herbivores in adaptation of plant populations and the persistence of selection through succession, we manipulated herbivory in a long-term field experiment. We suppressed insects in half of 16 plots over nine years and examined the genotypic structure and chemical defense of common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), a naturally colonizing perennial apomictic plant. ...
HIV-1 genotypic resistance test results were obtained on clinical samples from 116 patients with plasma HIV-1 RNA levels of less than 75 copies/mL. Genotype validity was confirmed in 49 of 50 patients with a previous or follow-up genotype. The belief that genotypic resistance testing is unreliable in samples with low-level viremia should be reassessed.
1. Genotypic diversity in plant populations is known to enhance plant performance and ecosystem function. Nonetheless, the effect of genotypic diversity has rarely been examined across a population’s lifecycle despite the expectation that changing conditions, such as population density, will alter the benefits of diversity. 2. We simultaneously manipulated a component of genotypic diversity (ri...
