High dietary intakes of some protein sources, including soy protein, can increase colonic DNA damage in animals, whereas some carbohydrates attenuate this. We investigated whether inulin and xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) could be protective against DNA strand breaks by adding them to a human colonic simulator consisting of a proximal vessel (PV) (pH 5.5) and a distal vessel (DV) (pH 6.8) inoculat...

Background: Hospitals discharge considerable amounts of chemicals in their wastewaters that may be genotoxic or present serious health hazards. The genotoxic potential of wastewater in a Lebanese University Hospital was evaluated using the SOS Chromotest and the Ames fluctuation test. Different concentrations were tested to determine the recommended dilution for each sample to decrease its geno...

The primary objective of the present study was to test whether agricultural chemical runoff was associated with in-stream genotoxicity in native fish. Using Sacramento sucker (Catostomus occidentalis), we combined field-caging experiments in an agriculturally dominated watershed with controlled laboratory exposures to field-collected water samples, and we coupled genotoxicity biomarker measurem...

BACKGROUND Silica dioxide (SiO2) has been used in various industrial products, including paints and coatings, plastics, synthetic rubbers, and adhesives. Several studies have investigated the genotoxic effects of SiO2; however, the results remain controversial due to variations in the evaluation methods applied in determining its physicochemical properties. Thus, well characterized chemicals an...

the aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the sensitivity of plant bioassays:tradescantia-micronucleus (trad-mcn) tests using bnl 02 and 4430 clones, and crepis capillaris hairyroots chromosome aberrations test. the evaluation of the sensitivity of the tests was based on the example of the analysis of the genotoxicity of water samples from two natural water reservoirs in poland: the raw...

CdTe nanocrystals capped by cysteamine were synthesized to study Cr(V)-induced genotoxicity. On the surface of TiO2 thin films, the stepwise process of DNA breakage induced by Cr(V)-GSH complexes was vividly observed by using CdTe-DNA self-assembled fluorescent probes; in acetate buffer solution, an analytical method was developed to detect Cr(V)-induced genotoxicity with CdTe fluorescent probes.

Nanotechnology has rapidly entered into human society, revolutionized many areas, including technology, medicine and cosmetics. This progress is due to the many valuable and unique properties that nanomaterials possess. In turn, these properties might become an issue of concern when considering potentially uncontrolled release to the environment. The rapid development of new nanomaterials thus ...

We evaluated the antimutagenic effects of 10 kinds of bioactive phytochemicals and some phytochemical combinations against methotrexate (MTX)-induced genotoxicity by the umu test in Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 combined with a micronucleus assay. We observed that allicin, proanthocyanidins, polyphenols, eleutherosides, and isoflavones had higher antimutagenic activities than the other ...

The accelerating production and use of engineered nanomaterials (NMs) raises questions about the safety of this new technology. To avoid the possible hazards associated with NMs requires proper regulation. How should toxicity testing be addressed and can standard tests for assessment of safety of chemicals be applied to NMs? What are the major limitations of NM safety testing and is the current...
