Fungus balls are a chronic and non-invasive fungal infection. Despite being relatively common in the paranasal sinuses, they rare nasal cavity. The etiology of fungus cavity is unknown. generally develop slowly asymptomatically. When symptomatic, can cause symptoms similar to those sinusitis or intranasal masses, such as obstruction, postnasal discharge, head face pain, smell perception disorde...
Actinomycosis is rarely accompanied by fungus balls. It difficult to distinguish between actinomycosis and a ball due their similar clinical computed tomography scan results. Thus, meticulous histopathological examination required for definite diagnosis. We report case of ball, found incidentally in patient without rhinologic symptoms. The was successfully treated with endoscopic sinus surgery,...
Perenniporia species are basidiomycetes, resupinate shelf fungi responsible for white rot decay of wood. Here, we report for the first time an intracavitary pulmonary fungal ball due to a species of Perenniporia that has not been recognized so far as a human pathogen. The fungus was identified by sequencing of the partial ribosomal operon of a culture from a clinical specimen.
BACKGROUND Following the recent transfer of all accepted species of Penicillium subgenus Biverticillium to Talaromyces (including Talaromyces marneffei, formerly Penicillium marneffei), Penicillium species are becoming increasingly rare causal agents of invasive infections. Herein, we present a report of a type 2 diabetes patient with a fungus ball in the respiratory tract caused by Penicillium...
Geosmithia argillacea, an anamorph of Talaromyces eburneus, is a thermophilic filamentous fungus that has a phenotype similar to that of the Penicillium species, except for the creamy-white colonies and cylindrical conidia. Recently, a new genus called Rasamsonia has been proposed, which is to accommodate the Talaromyces and Geosmithia species. Here, we report the first Korean case of G. argill...
Four cases of respiratory tract intracavitary colonization (fungus ball) due to Scedosporium apiospermum (teleomorph, Pseudallescheria boydii) are reported. The need for a careful search for anneloconidia, in order to establish the etiologic diagnosis in the clinical specimen by microscopy, is emphasized.
After the death from massive haemoptysis of two neutropenic patients who had developed apparent pulmonary mycetomas, two subsequent patients underwent successful resection of similar lesions. Histological examination of these lesions confirmed that these so called mycetomas were masses of devitalized lung tissue infiltrated with fungus. The term mycotic lung sequestrum is therefore proposed to ...

Thorax Published Online First: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/ thoraxjnl-2016-209437 DESCRIPTION A 65-year-old female presented with a cavitary lesion in the right upper lung field (figure 1A). The diagnosis was aspergilloma because of the chest CT appearance of a fungus ball-like mass in the cavity (figure 1B) and treatment was start...
