The cause of initial burst release of hydrophilic macromolecular drugs from biodegradable polymeric microspheres was identified. Poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres encapsulating fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labled dextran was prepared by a double emulsion solvent evaporation method. The extent of initial burst release was examined by varying the formulation process conditions s...
In the present study, a suitable drying method was developed for citrus press cakes (CPCs), which are produced as a by-product in citrus juice plants, and the protective effect of methanol extract of CPCs prepared by far-infrared radiation (FIR) drying against H(2)O(2)-induced DNA damage was evaluated versus that of freeze-dried CPCs. Methanol extract of FIR-dried CPCs exhibited comparatively g...
Orphanides A., Goulas V., Gekas V. (2013): Effect of drying method on the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of spearmint. Czech J. Food Sci., 31: 509–513. The changes in total phenolics, hydroxycinammic acid derivatives, and antioxidant properties of spearmint after five drying treatments (convection oven drying, freeze-drying, microwave drying, and air drying with the sun exposure and ...
Flowers from several common Mediterranean shrubs, such as those from the Cytisus genus and Genista genus (tribe Genisteae/Fabaceae) have long been used for medicinal purposes and seasoning in the northeastern Portuguese region. Despite, the shade-drying traditionally used to process these plants, freeze-drying is claimed to better preserve the quality of medicinal plants. Herein, the effects of...
Carbon fractions of tree tissues are a key component of forest carbon mass estimation. Several methods have been used to measure carbon fractions, yet no comprehensive comparison between methods has been performed. We found significant differences between carbon fractions derived from four sample preparation methods: oven-drying, vacuum desiccation, freeze-drying, and a new method that consiste...
Freeze-drying and gamma irradiation are the techniques widely use in tissue banking for preservation and sterilization of tissue grafts respectively. However, the effect of these techniques on biomechanical properties of bovine pericardium is poorly known. A total of 300 strips of bovine pericardium each measured 4 cm 1 cm were used in this study to evaluate the effect of freeze-drying on biome...
The ability of some microorganisms to survive a stress treatment such as freeze drying has been shown to improve when aging the cells is done before drying. Hutton and Shirey (1951) described the beneficial effects of adding filtrates from aged cultures to cell paste of Brucella abortus before freeze drying. Record and Taylor (1953) showed that an exudate of Escherichia coli offered protection ...
Freeze drying (FD) yields the best quality of dried sea cucumber but at the cost of long drying time and also the overall cost. Air drying (AD) gives an unacceptably poor quality product. To achieve faster drying along with a high quality product a microwave freeze drying (MFD) technique was developed to dry sea cucumbers. The relationship between corona discharge and microwave power at various...
Lyophilized preparations of Chlamydia trachomatis were made to investigate how well they would survive storage at four relevant incubation temperatures for 1 week and 1 month. Good viability was maintained by storage at either 4 degrees C or 20 degrees C for 1 week. If the ambient temperature is not too high, short-term transportation of C. trachomatis is achievable through lyophilization.
